You should read Shut Up and Give Me the Mic by Dee Snider. You needn't be a Twisted Sister fan, but it sounds like you'd like it. The story of the rise and fall of a celebrity. As opposed to Gillespie, Snider was sober all the time.
I'll give that Gillespie book a gander if I can find it somewhere.
