Yeah but I remember in those days we still had telephones and could call a store to ask if they had a product in stock and how much it cost before leaving the house (phone books allowed us to look up businesses), so it's not like people couldn't buy nice things before Amazon got huge unless you lived in a major city. If that was you though I'm sorry...
Yes some things are easier these days. Lost packages, waiting for stuff that got delayed or goofed up by the seller or damaged in shipping, being gouged on prices, and other nonsense still happens. But it's not as if we can't have both. I imagine some people still are in places that don't have reliable high speed internet, but I guess they could shop with a smart phone (shudder). My argument is that if stuff can't be purchased in stores and has to be ordered online, that's actually less convenient than if most people, except those living in rural areas let's say, have to buy it online if they want it. Yeah gas prices are high right now but most of the time it's much nicer to be able to just walk into a local store, look at the product, browse, think about if you want it. We called it "window shopping" back in the day, as opposed to just looking at a picture online (yeah, or a sponsored video in most cases) and having it arrive a week later.
HeroQuest was one of those games that was everywhere in its heydey. We didn't live in a major area and we still got it in a store back in the day. Even so, let's say you had to travel a little bit to get to your destination to buy the big Christmas gift, okay, but we're not talking about your dad bringing it back from his overseas business trip just maybe that it wasn't available at the local gas station mart. Maybe you had to go to Toys R' Us to get it instead of just local mom & pop toy store.
But being mainstream is how it ought to be... if they were aiming to make HeroQuest a niche product, then they failed, because it was never intended to be a niche product for collectors and elite painters. It certainly wasn't back in the day, in fact that was the whole point of its existence! They're still working towards that goal and the supply chain nonsense is the only thing holding it back, supposedly.
