You're taking the LoS rule to literal, this is HQ not Warhammer. As for the nerf, use the UK spells, I believe that was the consensus in these parts.

There's no such thing as "too literally". In the case of the spell, that's just how it works based on how it's written. The problem is that it was poorly worded in such a way that it's nearly useless. The UK version is worded similarly and is subject to the same problem, "The spell is broken when there are no more monsters visible to that player." A consensus? Now that just sounds made up.
Unless you specify your version I'm going by the US rules.

If you take it by the word, it is the player and not the model or figure. Just sayin'.

US version fixes that silly blunder so it reads as the Hero.

There totally is... as i mention in the other thread. Back to LoS... In HQ there is no facing but they had to give a simple mechanic for shooting arrows etc. We tend to ignore that for spells, who's to say it's a straight line bolt blast, which is clearly depicted differently on the box. If you're in the same area, you can 'see', same goes for through doors but you can't 'see' for shooting arrows. It's logical, it really doesn't need to be any more complicated.

The term "too literal" is when a player is anal about the words used in the rules. Especially when it's clearly not the intention. It's a game for kids, wrote in a time they didn't realise the height of problems with different interpretations. Only now, thanks to the internet, do we know these things and can find ways to word out those misinterpretations. WITHOUT WRITING AN ENCYCLOPEDIA!

No... The feeling I've got from reading these boards is... Most of us generally agree the UK spells are better than the US spells. Although they still (like the US version) need word fixes to avoid potential confusion.

There's no such thing as "too literally".

I just had to smile when I was imagining a player trying not to blink during minutes, just to keep the courage spell a little while longer, and Morcar just waiting and smiling while the player sheds tears.

There is no disagreement that the rules of Heroquest are sloppy to say the least. It is one of the reasons why so many of us like to make their own rules and cards.

I agree that you can't be too literally while developing a new game. It avoids problems later when playing the game.
In Heroquest, you'll find that the rules are not written that way. So there has to be an agreement, or you find yourself remaking the game very soon. 8-)

Don't! I suffered badly form this when trying to write how the Chaos Tokens worked. I had images in my mind of people interpreting the terms "draw a random token", as getting a pencil and some paper and drawing a random token. Once we delve down the rabbit hole of possible interpretations, there's no end of how being "too literal" can be taken. Simple paragraphs can turn in to month long nightmares!!!

I found it! The answer to the original question.

All credit to Count Mohawk, all blame on me... this was his idea.

559 Wand of Magic.jpg

We also defined "magic line of sight" as opposed to normal line of sight:
"magic line of sight" is anybody in normal line of sight, plus anybody in the same room (LOS or not).

So you can cast around your friends in my games.

I appreciate the credit, but when did I invent the Wand of Magic? Isn't that an artifact in the base game? :zombie:
