Anyone remember the old Dark Eye computer games? Simply starving when travelling overland was a common cause of party wipeout.

Which isn't fun - which is why basic stuff like eating, bathing and going to the bathroom shouldn't be a factor in a basic RPG.

Maybe the anti poison quill would be good for something after all the time. You eat that apple which is in the second green phase* and use it: bam, one body point back!

*you know. When it is young it is green. Then it becomes red later. Then it gets green again, with a beard.
