It's also worth noting that the Wizard is essentially much weaker in the US version than in the UK version.

Indeed - but a lot of players use extra BPs even if the play by UK rules. In general people tend to mix and match the particular rules from the two rule sets.

In principle all the heroes are weaker in US because the monsters are relatively stronger.
But remember there's no restrictions on the Artifacts, which means the wizard could wield Borin's Armor and the Spirit Blade for a decent 4 Armor and 3 Attack in addition to whatever gear he also wields. |_P

Not in the US version. Artifacts limit the Wizard.

This all depends on the difficulty of the game at hand.
If we are playing a basic game, there are no adjustments to monster Body Points.
Now if I am making it a bit more difficult I will assign a leader to every multi monster group in a room and that monster gets an additional BP.
Next step up I assign either improved dice for most monsters or all monsters in the dungeon get an additional BP.
Now to make it really difficult I give all monsters improved dice and additional body points. {This is what we call at my table Epic Play}

Improved Dice are homebrew dice that have been developed for HQ and used by many of us. Many of the cards you will encounter in these forums that are for homebrew HQ games will have various colors of dice listed for this or that. Some have more skulls than normal, some have faces with 2 skulls or shields or black shields. Some have a lot of shields and few skulls. I think the most popular is the Black Dice as it is one more skull and one less shield. I like to let the Barbarian attack with these dice in games where the Barbarian is well seasoned and has been through a number of dungeons.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

The mechanics are clunky, in wording. As 'Defended' is it's destroyed. If another hero approaches it, trying to free you, they go through the same process. I'd love to see a full group end up inside it.

Edit: the colours are faded for a reason, it was the best match i could get on my old printer, took some doing. I have a new one now, here's to hoping there's not much difference.
