Pretty sure I saw that rule in there somewhere but maybe I am daft, forgetful and making it up as I go...

edit to add: no not daft
The NA rulebook says "As a Hero, you may drink a potion at any time. "
Same in the proper rules I think. :)

That would work best. You shouldn't know the attacks roll before you drink it.

I think it would work best as intended and as worded.
To be precise, without overcomplicated thinking.

But then you'd know how many defence dice the attacker rolled before drinking the potion. That would mean you'd know the outcome before drinking it and would just wait until an attacker doesn't roll any black shields.

You still must roll a number of white shields along with one skull more than he rolled black shields.
You only have so many defence dice to roll and the key is you need a weighted result of two different symbols,
especially if the monster has more than one Body point.

You only need to roll skulls to counter hit, and you'd know how many you needed to roll before deciding whether to drink it.

So?
This is still a board game and some amount of game strategy is vital to getting through a dungeon.
Nice little exploit actually.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Monster rolls attack against you: :skull: :skull: :blackshield:
You need two different symbols if you drink the potion.
You defend: :skull: :skull: :whiteshield: :blackshield:
Result: you lose 1 :redheart: , monster loses 1 :redheart:
which would be an epitomic outcome of a mechanic named Potion of Retribution.

Meaning, yes there's strategy and you want to drink the potion after a monster rolls no :blackshield: , but still a lot of luck involved with a roll like that.
The perfect monster attack result would be only :whiteshield:
To me, it's still the intended wording that's best.

I was just pointing his out.

If you're happy with that then fine. I just don't think it works to wait for an attack, then drink a potion, and then defend the attack. It doesn't work thematically because there's a potion drinking action between being attacked and defending the attack. Same with healing potions. I don't think you should be able to heal yourself after seeing the attack dice and before rolling the defence dice. Same for potions of resilience/defence.

Technically...according to the rules...the side action (drink a Potion) can be done in the middle of the Action (Attack). It would be equivalent to opening a door (side action) during ones movement (Action). Thematically, on the other hand, it doesn't make sense (drink a Potion while an axe is chopping down at you). To keep the vanilla HQ rules would allow for drinking it. Depends on how simple the EWP wants to keep it.
