Or the black shield counts as an attack/defend too. Slightly up the odds.

That is a good one!

My dedicated Defence/Attack is Stand Fast, Usually a dwarf characteristic (AHQ model). Sacrifice movement and get +1Cd6. The Chaos Warriors get this too but only in attack, they already have it in defence by default (no need to remember if moved or not), Making it 4/4 Uk ed, i think US ed it's 4/4 anyways.

And don't forget Chaos Armour. "The warriors armour is enchanted, roll any black skulls when attacking a Chaos Warrior and it will negate a skull". So they're technically getting a chance to defend in your Attack roll. The Enchantment might only be in a specific room and should have an ability to break it via a trigger in the dungeon.

What I like most about it is that it fits into the basic rules without affecting anything else. Could even imagine having this written on cards as a special ability to give it to a player/hero. It would work just like an item, only that it isn't a physical item in the game world, but perhaps something granted for reading a book on the art of fencing...
This is also why I like the version with extra dice best. Fits in the general system, which uses weapons as upgrades, giving exta dice.
Have a look ;)

I like them both.

Book gives you 1 point.
Academy training will give you the second point, after your hero completes 10 missions. (got to simulate the Experience point costs some how) Also you could argue that the training requires actual combat experience to gain the highest levels of proficiency in combat.

This thread keeps getting better and better.
As my version of the game is modularized, anyway, there will be non-questbook supplements to implement at any point when the group wishes.

Re: Dedicated Defense/Dedicated Attack

I just thought of a similar thing for the Wizard.

Wizard Base Ability
Elemental Wrath
The Wizard may call on all of the forces of nature to dangerous effect when the need is strong.
By calling in the power of the elements the Wizard may inflict 4 Dice of Elemental Damage to a target with out the use of a spell card.
When calling on the elements in this fashion, the Wizard may not Move or Defend until their next turn.

Notes: My first thought was to allow the Wizard to use as many Attack Dice as the Wizard has in Mind points. But that is over kill. Then I had the thought that the Wizard may gain a Combat Dice bonus for each Element he commands (that is to say he still has at least 1 Spell card in the school). So if he has cast all of one of his three elements, he gets no bonus for that elemental school.
But then it gets too complicated.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Love these ideas! To add flavour, if playing with coloured dice, why not make the 4 dice the elemental colours - blue, white, orange, black - water, wind, fire, Earth? Might make it too powerful though.

Generally there could be a rule that to use any of these abilities costs 1MP, to represent the force of will required to pull off such a feat.

I love that Elements dice color rule!
