I think you recover 1 mp because the minotaur had 1 mp.

Minotaur starts at 2 MP, unless something else happened to it.

I should have saved my action (to heal AA if he goes down), but I thought the pirate might have been able to do something a little more heroic without the Minotaur harrying him (and possibly save AA in the process).

What do you think of a Defend action? Lose your action but gain +1 Defense die for next attack against you. Does that seem imbalanced?
