The Winds of Magic: http://www.mediafire.com/download/joi73 ... _Magic.zip

The Winds of Magic
Not all Magicians have their own internal source of power. Instead, some are able to channel the ethereal winds of magic that emanate from the chaos portal to the north and blow throughout the Old World through their bodies and manipulate them into useful spells. Each of the eight winds has its own colour and its own properties. Some lend themselves to offensives spells while others are more subtle. Most humans who have this ability are able to channel one of the eight winds and spend most of their lives trying to master their particular flavour of magic. Light Wizards are the exception in that their form of magic is a combination of the four light elemental winds, although they are unable to separate them into their constituent parts.

Eight colleges were set up in the Empire's capital city of Altdorf, one for each of the seven winds that blow strongly across the Empire and one for the practitioners of Light magic in order to maximise the potential of these powerful and often dangerous Magicians. Although they are capable of casting extremely potent spells, are adept at dispelling enemy spells and are more suited to hand to hand combat than most other Magicians, there is a price. Having to rely on an external force of energy means their spell casting abilities are at the mercy of the strength of the winds of magic at that particular moment. Their less powerful spells however require less energy to cast.

Another drawback to this method of spell casting is that because the spells are redirected energy from an external source rather than powered my the Magicians themselves, their spells tend to be easily dispelled. While spells from self-powering Magicians normally require another Magician with a particular spell in order to be countered, anyone can potentially dispel magic from a Magician who utilises the winds of magic to power their spells, although being a powerful Magician definitely helps.

Cool, some feel abit cramped text-wise, I'd try and trim the descriptions down if you could.

What about the idea of including the respective magic sigil on the back of the card?

Yea I know a couple are a bit full up but I wanted to avoid incomplete rules and the players having to refer to something separate for the full rules. I trimmed them down as much as I could and used a smaller (but still easily readable) text size on a couple. Most of them are dead simple.

I like the spell backs as they are now but I might end up putting the sigil on them as well. It would probably make most of them look nicer.

Cheers for PMing me the magic card rules. |_P I'll have those done hopefully tomorrow.

Fixed a couple of things with the amethyst spells. There was a silly wording mistake on the purple scythe spell. I've also changed the caress of laniph so it uses starting BP instead of attack dice in place of strength plus a couple of other minor tidy ups. Using BP makes more sense, that's how I did it with the other spells.

Bright: http://www.mediafire.com/download/s3kcp ... _Magic.zip
Bright's the same as before (the second version). Celestial up next.

The celestial spell cards. :) Hmm, such pretty.
Celestial: http://www.mediafire.com/download/7rkcc ... _Magic.zip

Edit:
If you happened to download it in the first ten minutes after I posted it you got the version where the celestial wizard conjures bagical swords. Doh! Fixed now.

Re: My First Finished Card Sets-Bright/Amethyst/Celestial sp

Postby mitchiemasha » February 3rd, 2016, 11:20 am

I've had a quick look through but not had chance to read the text effects yet.

Constructive feedback off first impressions.

One simply can't print that much text on some of those cards, regardless to being clear, this would need to be changed.

Also... In Design... There is a very important thing known as invisible lines. Not everyone knows about these or why they are so important. They are often more important than the content. These lines need to be consistent across each card. And, more importantly, consistent on each card itself. Some people don't know about it and just get it right but must need it pointing out. It's the reason why something is nice to look at and why something isn't. It's all about symmetry, Michaelangelo did lots on it.

I was lucky that the very first time I had some flyers/posters printed (many years ago now), the lad at the print shop took me under his wing and explained it to me. He probably enjoyed my enthusiasm at learning what he knew. Obviously him fresh from design school and me some random kid from the street. I can't express how much I thank his words, made a huge difference. Many places wouldn't care and just print what you turn in. Our events wouldn't of seen half the success with out his input/extra time.

Basically, the second paragraph needs to fall exactly in line with the first or be centre aligned. Having them not so makes it look rushed and randomly thrown together, with lil thought. It's the lil things that make a dig difference. Correct that and graphically you'll have made a huge leap forward.

It's been a while since I've worked in design but here's a lil step through of one of my flyers.

If you click an image it'll step through the layers with a lil explanation. If you need some help on getting the fronts better, some tricks to learn, just give me a shout.

As for word/space saving, i'll give you an example.

"The Amethyst wizard conjures a magical scythe to attack their foes". As the holder is the Amethyst wizard it only needs to say. "Conjure a magical scythe to attack your foes". The card should be spoken from a point of view of the holder. When wrote in the book it could be the way you have done.

"During the this turn"... the 'the' can be ditched. and, what is 1D3?

try "During this turn and your next turn, your attack is replaced by ???. The rolled value counts as that many skull attacks on each and all adjacent enemies. (New line) Magical Weapon"

Edit: It could even say "during this turn and the next, your attack is..." Even more words cut. As originally I said 'your' twice, and it's unneeded.

Told you, lol... I really got into this subject. Not just HQ but how lines can be wrote in many different ways. I think that other post I made, in my thread, was too long and scared people!!!

|_P for the feedback. There's a couple of things I was going to improve before the final release anyway. The portend pic for example is nowhere near centre. I shouldn't have put 'finished' in the topic title, that's not really what I meant. It makes it seem like they're the final versions, I'll change that.

mitchiemasha wrote:One simply can't print that much text on some of those cards, regardless to being clear, this would need to be changed.
Why? Better that than have to refer to somewhere else for the full rules. I've tried to keep the spells as simple as possible but without ditching the any original WH effects. That makes some spells quite wordy but I don't think any of them are too overly complicated. I am going to try cutting down the needless wording though like you suggested.

I tried to centrally align each paragraph rather than align the paragraphs with each other. I don't think they're that far out.

That's something I'm going to put with the master rules to save space on the cards. I think the vast, VAST majority of people who will read it will understand what the term means.
