I tell you what; Anderas, send me the pics that you have edited and I will do my best at re-drawing them in a similar style to the originals, obviously with a few artistic differences. I will do five at first see if you like them and if so then I will do the rest. No harm, no foul, no copyright issues!

Count Mohawk, that last one is just crazy! :) As if communism was a bad thing in itself  Just it doesn't work. It's like saying "So everybody behave now." Wow what an effect. Did you achieve something? :D

Back to topic!

To be legal with Ulisses, you have to put it in context with DSA and cite the right owner somewhere close (that means, without clicking... only scrolling). That's quite nice! Normally, companies just say straight "no" in order to save all their rights.

If i would theoretically post them here; I wouldn't give credit to anybody as this would only show lawyers where to search. Without credit, the google search is, let's say, ten minutes longer... maybe sufficient to point the wild lawyer at easier victims.

Thanks for the offer!
I will use the following some weeks to find out which of them i would like to use (some are double, some are useless...) and then i would really like to come back to your offer!

If I grab a picture from the net for my game it is no big deal as far as I am concerned.
I do not make money from them. They are props for a table top game between friends. The stuff I have used that is copyrighted has always been to use the image in a way that the owners don't have in mind. Like for Heroes Character sheets we may go rooting through the nets images looking for a cool picture that resembles the hero. Then that picture is added in the picture box of the character sheet (or Home printed Card) and printed off. If I copy and paste a Rowena or Frazeta or other piece of fantasy art on a character sheet or home-made card, it is what it is. No one sells such pictures pre-printed on character sheets...I am not cutting into someone's pocket, and I do not sell them, nor do I profit in any way.

Now as for stealing a picture for profit. That is a whole new can of worms and downright wrong.

So basically my take is that if it is for personal use and no one is losing money on the deal, then rock on. But if it is for profit...you are a crook.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

For sure, that's not the problem. No-one would ever know if i use his art for a card, print it off, and use it with my friends.

Problem is, i would like to share here, too. :)

I think it's safe to say that image was created by pirates/sympathizers! It's very ironic.

Count Mohawk wrote:And they wonder why piracy still exists. Honestly, I could harp on the subject for hours, but I don't want drathe to add copyright to the list of topics "that cause friction among passionate members", so I'll leave it at that.
Nah, just remember to keep it civil folks |_P
That list cracks me up by the way. Especially "science"?!? wtf? I must have been on a break when that happened
And on that note... let me make it very clear, I don't give a damn if anyone in here commits copyright violations in the name of HeroQuest, whether it be for sharing or private use.
I just enjoy talking about it. As a hobby artist and game-creator I take an interest in what you can and can't do in these matters.

But it's kinda funny how it's widely regarded as an innocent crime. It's almost not even a crime, but more of a right!
My favorite example are from the music industry. I always hear people say "but I wouldn't ever have bought the album anyway".
No? I'm pretty sure if those millions of people couldn't download songs, a whole lot of them would have bought the albums.
It's all a bunch of BS rationalizing. If you are gonna download music, just admit you do it because it's easy, basically risk free and you don't want to pay for music. That's it!
Don't start with greedy corporations or explaining how the artists don't really loose any money.

I would regard it as a crime if I take your work and make money with it. For sure!

I would pay if I could. Heck I paid for that book! Now that I have it I shall not use it?

I'm standing at the same border.
The decision I've made (for now) is to use what I want for my own game, have it printed, and share only my texts for people to use them if and how they want to. As I'll gather various works for my printed version of HQ, and want to be safe with it, I won't be able to offer such a concise body of work as, say, Slev's, but the main thing is, I do want to share.

I do not know copyright laws outside of the U.S. However...what I understand about U.S. laws might help
(realize, of course, I could be wrong about all of this...):

You can use up to 10% of a product without violating copyright law...this is called fair use, and usually
applies to music and films and such...and typically applies to instances where someone is not making
money and credit is given where necessary.

As for art...typically what can be done is this: If you can change the picture enough that the owner cannot
100% prove that the work is his or hers, then you can use it as you wish. Normally, what I've been told, is that
you can take a portion of the image and perhaps add somethings or take some stuff away. Or you can take
that portion and add a filter or two, and maybe change colors a bit.

My concern would be this: If it was something you were going to post here, I would be worried that either drathe
or the community as a whole could get in trouble and cause damage to the reputation we have as fans. It worries
me, even, when I see cards or quest covers and such that include pictures that very clearly use images from other
works (typically D&D and the bigger publisher RPG books).

I would just say tread carefully, and be aware that we need to put a good face forward as fans of HQ, so that others
will take us seriously and we don't rile up the original copyright owners.
(For example...I've read in a couple of places here that Gary Chalk can be easy going with his work and I believe has
allowed one or two people to use stuff, provided they are not selling commercially)
