pretty cool
In my games the weight of 1 gold coin is 1/10th of a troy ounce. This makes the coin slightly smaller than the size of a standard American dime. Same with silver 1/10th ounce, which is the size of a dime.
Also the metal is .925 pure, the impurities are typically copper, silver and trace platinum group metals, unless it is made from ore mined by the dwarves then the impurities are mithril and adamantium.

I make the coins small like Roman coins. Your Empire gets more use out of their metals, and the heroes can more easily carry larger sums of cash. If your heroes coins are all 1 ounce coins, then a treasure trove becomes to heavy to transport. Also many historic kingdoms/empires that used copper, silver and gold as specie made smaller coins than the bullion coins that investors purchase today.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Now my brothers game is rude. Coins in his game are huge and weigh 1/10th of a pound. Thus 10 coins is one pound. That piles up on the weight department rapidly. This encourages the heroes in his game to utilize the banks much more often that they otherwise would.

I own a bag of the plastic coins mentioned in the first posting.
They're quite good! Some 3 or 4 centimeters diameter. And, you get a lot of them per bag.

I was hiding one of them in the Sandbox of my daughter. She was very excited when she found it some days later.
Then it was laying around outside in the sun. These plastic coins and the sun are no good friends! The yellow color was somehow burned away. Now it is a silver coin.

Explain it as Elves with glamour spells passing off silver for gold!
