I backed a kickstarter with these folks. Keep an eye on them, they should be up and running
soon (I hope). You can design pretty much any sort of die you want.

Orange Dice for all combat rolls for the Boss in a dungeon. Sick. :D
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

My custom dice will include:
Heroes:
a set of yellow (skull/skull/double skull/WS/WS/BS),
a set of orange (skull/double skull/double skull/WS/WS/BS)
a set of red (skull/double skull/triple skull/WS/WS/BS)

For special defensive heroes, each of those above will have three white shields and no black shields.
For special monsters, each of those above will have only one white shield and two black shields.

There will also be a black - 4 skulls and one of each shield.

I'm also going to have a light green - which is for special defense rolls - three skulls, three white shields.
For special monsters, dark green, with three skulls, one white shield, and two black shields.

For special defense that reduces attack - for heroes, light blue with two skulls, three white shields, and one black shield
And for monsters dark blue with two skulls, two white shields, and two black shields.

So - 14 custom dice all together - and I'm ordering 2 or 3 sets of each.

I like the conan system here. Three dice, one weak one middle, one strong. Useable for both, attack and defense. All in all the results are much higher, which is equalized by permanent defense bonuses.
That the results are much higher results in much more calculable results that adhere more to the average; and that in turn makes balancing easier.

No need for 15 (!) dices. :)

Image

Of these, i like the most the purple and the orange.
The purple and the orange because they really provide added value: You can't easily simulate them with normal dices.
The black and green i find less usefull - they are beautiful but you can do it with normal dices.
The blues are really strange - So often have I heard that the evil may defend on white shields that these are really not useful. :)
if I were to make my own dices, there would be no difference between white and black shields, to start with.

What i really miss are these dice:
skull - skull - 2x skull - 3x skull
skull - 2x skull - 2x skull - 3x skull

And the equivalents with the same amount of shields.

One of the things that really stop me from ever buying these - besides not being wood, so they won't blend in with the dice I already own - is the fact they painted the icons white!
I can accept white paint on the black dice, but on all the colored dice it just looks kinda "fake" as the original dice use black.
Black paint would be easy enough to see on a colored background, except perhaps the dark blue.
I guess I'm just a little OCD that way...

I also fully agree with Andreas; Most aren't really that useful. It all boils down to X chance to roll a certain amount of Y.
Since every die rolled is either a success or a fail, you could simply add more dice to the roll.

But I'm a little curious though. How DOES you people who bought these actually use them?
And by "you people" I mean ne r ds.

The way I think these could be used is:
Use the white set as the base set. Just like the normal dice.
Sometimes when you get a special weapon, or a special skill/spell, it lets you add 1 or 2 coloured dice.

Example: you find the axe of slaying: attack with 2 white dice and 2 black dice.
You find the ring of protection: defend with your regular dice + 1 green die (or replace all your defense dice with green dice)
You encounter an orc warlord, who attacks and defends with blue dice.
This room is cursed. demons in this room defend with 1 extra blue die.
This room is blessed. Heroes defend with 1 extra geen die.

etc.

I don't like these at all.
in addition to the fact that the original dice are THE HQ prop I came to love the most by even identifying the game WITH the combat system and all probabilities are covered by the symbols, I hate the coloring of these.
They could at least have made the effort to color them according to cliché or... I don't know. Black dice for those especially great for monsters or evil characters?
Red for 4 skull-dice (drawing more blood)? That's not so difficult to do.

Also, I'll sign Goblin-King's comment.

As for them being used, Flint from the German forums has long since written his own set of rules, which incorporate these dice in all kinds of manner.
But that's one step away from boardgaming and a step towards RPG. Which I don't get.

I'm using them in HQR, mostly in the "advanced variant" I'm building, which makes the game a little more interactive. In the "classic" rules, I use the greens for unarmed attacks, and that's about it.

Gimmeyergold, it is a possibility to give the heros a fraction of a dice bonus or malus.

If you have a hero attacking with two dice, then he buys an equipment, and then he has three dice, it is quite a big step. If you just exchange a white dice by a black one, the step is less big.

My ideas with the dice, and why I am only getting two or three of each type
I'm ordering, is just what sjeng said. You have the white dice as the base, and
if anyone has a special weapon or armor or skill, the color dice would add to
or replace on or two of the white dice.

That's how I plan to use them.
