How to do bases...

Postby Tomkat364 » November 18th, 2014, 5:25 pm

I've seen some really great bases on minis that have been posted, but I'm hesitant to go cutting the minis off the premade bases. Does anyone have any good suggestions how to do this without making the feet uneven or losing too much off the bottoms?

Look up a tool called razor saw. it can cut plastic straight without losing much material.
I got mine off ebay, zona razor saw 52 tpi (teeth per inch). It's super reliable and has cut hundreds of metal and plastic pieces so far and still works pretty good after 2-3 years. Extremely cheap as well.

I use a #15 xacto blade [its a chisel] I then start at the toes and kind of scrape it off the base it takes time and is extremely dangerous but is the cleanest way I have found ive also used clippers which are fast and easy but the base is destroyed razor saws work ok but they do tend to take a little off the bottom of the feet for zombies once I drilled two holes and then used a small saw [like on a swiss army knife] to cut the center out of the base with the feet then clipped off remains to get the feet flat

If you don't care for the original bases, you can use clippers to cut off the base around the feet and then file down the rest of the base beneath the feet.
That's safe and clean.
If you want to save the base (because these go for money on ebay; or you wanna keep them for other plans) I second tasoe's saw.
It has worked for me, the bases will be relatively smooth after sanding them down a little.

Yea, I ut bases away with tin-snips if I'm doing this. Base gets trashed in the process.

I simply pimp the existing bases with milliput.

Sjeng... do you just put a thin layer down and texture it? I need to look at your minis again to see what the bases look like.

Yeah, here are a few tutorials. one for adding milliput to bases, and one for making molds of pre-textured bases and duplicating them:
