How about after I put a base coat on? Would I then be able to use spray paint?
Ideally it would be nice to be able to use one of those rock-texture paints.

definitely test it first, don't hold the spray too close, but as long as you have a full base coat coverage it should work.

When I want to paint styrofoam, I would use white glue (PVA/Elmer's) as a solid surface. At first, I would apply liberal amounts to it and spread it round, making sure I get them in the gaps. I let it dry, and then add more to thicken it up. Each time, it creates a harder shell. If its thick enough, and there are no gaps anywhere, then I could spray paint it.

Not yet, no. I haven't had the chance to start on it yet. AND, I just realized the other day...I took
a closer look at the pieces, and there is a ridge right in the middle of the "floor" area, which means
probably more cutting. I hope to try it out soon, though.

A little bit of polyfiller always works wonders on styrene in case you make a mistake or want to fill in a gap, It relatively cheap too buying the pre-mixed stuff, or any other wall filler that you have laying around.

Maybe I'll try that instead. I have plenty of wall filler.
