I felt the same about the high price, thus I house ruled the 50 gold coin, gone-on-a-black-shield version. It kinda equivicates to three times the value of a standard dagger. However, I also favor a houserule for weapon and armor damage so that players need to account for other costs. Similarly, I have competing spell purchase options for spellcasters to drain their coffers, as well. Adding a continuous gold coin drain helps to cap dagger purchases at higher levels where more gold coins are available.
That's a lot of extra rules to get things how I want 'em, while the standard 25 gold coin dagger balances just fine as is. I gotta respect a rule that works simply, even if I monkeyed with it.
Oh yeah, I just thought up another unarmed-combat nerf: A Hero defends with one less Defend die while fighting without a weapon. The basic 2 Defend dice only works when a hard weapon is available to intercept attacks. It's easier to not get mangled by a sword when you can deflect it with a dagger instead of an arm.
