Q Workshop has this service for years, plus a pleroma of great dice of their own design. Don't remember the prices now.
Have a look ;)

Would these images be useful?

The kickstarter says they need to be 300 dpi and designed for 15 mm square... no idea how to tell that.

Q workshop states they cannot use art from a game already published if we are not the artist.
Would we actually be able to use the icons from HQ dice to make dice with the kick starter?
Or would we actually have to draw our own skulls and shields?

Like Q workshp, I would be hesitant to use the exact art from the game without express consent from the publisher.

If someone wanted to or already has designed something similar though, there shouldn't be a problem.

Here's a potential design I put together using some of the stock graphics that are going to be on my site once it launches (imagine this folded into a cube):

I'll admit, I have never personally played HeroQuest, so I don't know enough about it to know for sure how close the dice need to be to original to keep the style and feel of the game.

My stock graphics do include other shields and a few skulls that could potentially be useful. Something closer to the original design is definitely possible as well if there's copyright free source for the art.

Oh! And in regards to the square/rounded edges of the dice, I am considering adding in a stretch goal that would open up all the colors with rounded edges. I've received quite a few requests for that, just need to finalize a few things on my end to see if we can make it happen.

Just wanted to post an update to let you know that I chatted with the support on Hasbro's website, and they gave me a form to fill out to request permissions. I submitted it with the relevant information. So hopefully we can get it all cleared to use the original art and do it legally. They say it takes 1-4 weeks for them to get back to me and they may not get back to me if they don't approve it.

Worst case scenario though, we can work it out to do something that is similar and looks good but with slightly different artwork.

I appreciate that hard work - clearly you are professional and serious - I feel good about backing you :)

I, personally, will probably look at your graphics first, and maybe see if someone here at the Inn can
make a graphic for me second - I'd rather not deal with Hasbro at all, if at all possible.

Again...thanks for the hard work.

Re: Custom Dice Kickstarter

Postby torilen » April 14th, 2014, 8:21 pm

In case anyone is curious, here is what I plan to have
made for my HQ dice:
White (I have these, so I will not have any of these made)
Black - four skulls, white shield, black shield
Green - 3 white shields, 3 black shields
Blue - four white shields, 2 black shields
Yellow - two skulls, 1 double skull, 2 white shields, 1 black shield
Orange - one skull, 2 double skulls, 2 white shields, 1 black shield
Red - one skull, one double skull, 1 triple skull, 2 white shields,
.....1 black shield

If orange does not come up for a color - I will make a white die with
orange inset - it says the designs can be filled with that color.
The blue and green dice are for special monsters and special armors,
allowing for greater defense rolls. Same goes for the yellow, orange,
and red dice, for special weapons and attacks.

That makes six dice. I'm getting two dozen...I plan to make at least
2 or 3 of each of the above.
Anyone have any suggestions for any others, as I will have at least
six more dice I can make.
I am thinking about a weather die, maybe. Anyone have ideas for
trap or spell dice? Any other ideas?

EDIT: Maybe a die or two with double shields? Triple shields?

Eh....the colors are different than what I want, and the die faces are not QUITE what I want on each die.
Also, more expensive than backing the kickstarter...and I like the idea of helping another company get
into the market.
