They don't necessarily. The EU rules were meant as a competition amongst the heroes, from what I understand anyway. US version is more of a cooperation, but depends on the player, right? :)
You mean the increased monster stats force the players to work together or are there other differences I'm not aware of?

Well with that idea I was thinking that it would just be the heroes, no monsters at all. The board could be all laid out at the with various treasure chests dotted about that have a random outcome if they're opened. You could still have automated monsters, either placed on the board at the start or randomly appearing in rooms. Again, this would work a lot better with undead than anything else.

Of course there could be a DM. That way there could be secret doors dotted about that can only be searched for if there's no rival heroes in sight so they're easily missed. You could do it with teams as well.

Increased monster stats combined with the armory instead of equipment cards. Gold is used for buying things as opposed to keeping score.

Second that. The NA game only encourages cooperation in the p.10 text read to the players at the start of the game. The Gen Con game we played added a Quest objective for competetive chest-looting to dicourage cooperation between teams.

Second again. Also, the Elf and Barbarian Quest Packs introduced gameplay differences to be used in expansions, and it is simply retconned: "To eliminate conflicts among the Heroes, large gold coin treasures found in treasure chests should be divided among all surviving Heroes."

I really don't think the players should be forced to split gold. That's an agreement they're free to come to on their own. I don't think they should be forced to work together in any way, but not allowed to attack or cast hostile spells on each other. I prefer a more open game. Of course most players want to work together anyway, which is fine. I suppose this isn't really an issue with the US rules because they have to work together or they're dead because of how much better some of the monsters are. US chaos warriors are scary!
