Usually yes. But I added this rule at the beginning of the quests for treasure chests.

Treasure chests
These may only be opened by a Hero that is standing adjacent to the treasure chest. A trapped chest must be disarmed by standing adjacent to the chest and rolling a combat die in the usual way.


The hand axes were in the treasure chest. The rest of the room remains unsearched.
