A festive Adventure?

Postby Jackyboy » November 25th, 2013, 12:55 pm

Since I’ve started playing HeroQuest again with some friends, I’ve been drawn to the idea of creating a fun festive adventure! An adventure to play outside of the campaign I am currently running for them, for some fun over Christmas. An adventure where real prizes can be won! :D

I thought the main point of the quest would be to save Santa from the evil clutches of _____ Some festive badass! There could be treasure chests a plenty with goodies from a real lucky dip bag (sweeties, beer etc ;)) Also there could be a side mission to locate the lost treasures of the three wise men (Gold, Frankincense and Meer) and perhaps even staving off an invasion of monsters from the stables where little boy Jesus is being born!

What do you guys think of my festive questing fun?

I've often thought of trying to make some holiday-based quests. It's really hard, though...except for halloween.
Most fantasy worlds don't have anything similar to easter, thanksgiving, or christmas...and if they do, they're
just remakes of the real world holiday and don't lend themselves well for quests and adventures and such.
You can add holiday and seasonal flavor - that's your plan, adding in Santa and loads of goodies in chests -
but a real holiday adventure - hard to do.

I think the best you could hope for is if you did actual role-playing, and you had your players role-play their
holiday interaction with game master characters.

yes it is hard, good points raised by the way :)

I think I may just go for an all out monster-athon with lots of fun treasure to be had. I'm sure that will make them merry over christmas...what with all the rum they'll find

Thanks for the input Torilen |_P

Road Warrior - I'm a little fascinated and concerned that you have something like that.

I might offer one suggestion, if you're going to do the treasure free-for-all - I would make it
a one-off, so the regular heroes don't get overpowered. OR, make the treasures a whole bunch
of small, semi-inconsequential treasures that won't overpower them in the future.

If you really want to have some fun - I just remembered an idea I've mulled over a number of times.
Have you ever seen Nightmare Before Christmas? You could have halloween folks trying to take over
a christmas land or thanksgiving land.

Thanksgiving land would be native-american style inhabitants - maybe talking wolves, turkeys, deer,
bears, and other animals. Christmas land would have walking snowmen and "whos from whoville" - yeah,
silly, I know, but it's part of christmas, right?
You can use stereotype fairy tales, also - Jack Frost, Abominable Snowman, and Father Time are associated
with christmas/new years.

And remember, native-american style characters do not need to be human - barbarians, elves, dwarves, etc.
work just fine - just give them the right cultural effects.
