I'm curious if those of you saying things like "they shouldn't do it at all" saw the recent edition of Space Hulk.
It took the rules and missions from the original game, plus all of its expansions, with a few tweaks for modern game philosophy. It included some truly spectacular miniatures, and even the game board pieces were indented. And the result was incredible.
HeroQuest was a classic, for sure. But it was of its time. Take a look at the models (the dreadful Dwarf, if no others)... iconic? Sure. Hideously bland and lacking in detail compared to models being made now? Yes. Undeniably yes.
I would absolutely love to see a modern remake of HeroQuest along the lines of the recent version of Space Hulk. A complete set of new figures, and a new gameboard. Stuff from the expansions (even if not all of them) rolled into the main game. More treasure cards, more spells. Make space for that by dropping the pointless monster cards and character cards. Make it widely available, so more people know about it, and want to play it. It could be fantastic. Best of all, all those custom quests and cards people have been creating for the last 25 years... none of it would be invalidated. So what's the problem?
Will the actual product be anything like that? Don't know. The fact they don't (appear to?) have any ownership of or rights to the trademark doesn't fill me with hope, even if their intentions are good. But done well, it could be brilliant.
