Sjeng wrote:Great, you've started painting!! Now take a breath, and a really fine brush, and try touching up some edges. Then, if you feel up to it, try highlights. That's simply using a slightly lighter shade of the base colour to touch up the elevated areas and edges. You can use the side of the brush for that. After that, apply a black wash over the chainmail and iron bits. Apply a brown wash over the leather bits. Then if you really feel adventurous, try an emblem on the shield and perhaps colour the lower parts of the helmet a darker metal (the 2 halves inside the elevated bands). Oh and perhaps a light wash over the fase (not the eyes) and hands for more shading.

Sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. You already did the most work :)

Keep it up!!

But I already did a wash over the chainmail bits... =(

For highlights can I just add some white to the base color? I don't have any other blues.

Oh, well, flash sometimes lights things up too much :P
And yes, mixing in some white is the way to go.

Pro tip: for chainmail you can achieve great results by basecoating in black, and then drybrushing metallic paint over it lightly. ;)

You can't really see the wash :(
I have to learn how to drybrush better too, I always leave too much paint on the brush or scrape it all off.

Use a spongebrush instead.

Still needs a touch up on the spots that chipped off, but I am proud of how his one turned out.

Hey look at that! Great improvement there ;)
You seem to have gotten the hang of drybrushing I think, and the detail on the face/mouth is great!

Thanks you guys! I think half the problem was not doing washes correctly either. This one was much easier for both. I never would have guessed that doing all that stone on the base would be so easy!

The skull turned out very nice too. Now I need to find something to keep the paint from chipping off. Hardware store had nothing :(

Some minis I coat in a thin (or thick) layer of Quickshade, which is great for preserving paint, and I ALWAYS varnish them with a spraycan of anti-shine varnish. That also helps a lot, and takes away any unwanted quickshade gloss.
Even when you don't want to add pigment shading from the quickshade, you can dip in a brush without shaking the can, and you'll have a much clearer varnish that you can apply thinly with your brush.
