First Look, Female Dwarf Hero Concept Art

The first design step was a reverse-engineer the scale of the original HQ hero minis. The original dwarf was three heads tall, proportioned in three, 8mm sections--head, torso, and legs/feet. 8mm arms, from shoulder to wrist; 5mm hands, from the wrist. The male dwarf had slightly larger hands (6mm), but the best measure for hands is the size of the face, so we went with that, instead.

She is armed like the unused Don Kuekker concept sketch (the one with the hammer dwarf, polar warbear, and ice gremlin), but with some modifications made to the helmet (and obviously, the gender). Possible further changes would be to add in the fur half-cape from that same sketch, or a Flint Fireforge-esque horse-hair (or griffon, if you believed him) plumage to the tip of the helm.

The hammer is modeled after some random dwarf warhammer from a box of Warhammer Fantasy dwarf bits.

She will likely have a removable shield made. I have not yet designed that.

I wanted her expression to show defiance; both for her seemingly perpetual absence from the original line of miniatures, and for the comparative ratio of male:female dwarf minis on the market, today (or ever, really).

For the love of... you don't make the hair cover the boobs on a female character!

While the artwork is pretty good, I think it's missing some of the celtic/viking details of her male counterpart. The dwarf has that circle on his axe and the dragon belt buckle.
I think the helmet are a bit much too. I do realize the other two females are also helmet-less, but there's a reason for that; namely that they look more feminine without.

Verdict: It's a good start, but there's still room for improvement.

The hair is meant to draw comparison to the male dwarf's beard. I did not want to put a beard on a female dwarf, so I made her have long hair with similar chest-coverage. The female barbarian wears a helmet, also. I think trying to make a dwarf female attractive is a battle lost before even being fought. I was more concerned, anyway, with making a female dwarf that suggests "she's going to kill things."

I plan to more than compensate for this one's lack of "sexiness" with the female wizard.

Oh, I'd like the female wizard to wear overknee boots. Seriously, I do.

I was actually going to put her in sort of an epitoga that shows cleavage.

It isn't (only) about sexiness. It's more about conveying it's a female. An admittedly difficult task when it comes to dwarfs.
But hiding her boobs behind beard-look-alike hair is not the way to go. And for God's sake don't even consider a beard. That is a bad joke that needs to go away forever.
A golden middleway between killingness and sexiness exists, even for dwarfs, as this very excellent Reaper mini proves:

Once she's in three-dimensions you'll have no problem regarding her as female. Also, no beard. That's a dead giveaway.

By the way, regarding the female wizard. Is she going to be based on the unreleased version?
