HispaZargon wrote:Dear all,

Recent interview with Stephen Baker published by GW's specialist Jordan Sorcery (more info availlable in this thread) revealed a lot of unknown information about how was developed the Battle Masters board game and the people involved in the process.

Some of the most interesting points we could derive from such interview were a few details about the first prototype/s of the game, which I will try to summarize here:

    - The game was always intended to include minimum 100 miniatures since the beginning of the project, so we may assume that all prototypes had such amount too.
    - Rumors say that early prototypes did not included the Tower model, but included even more miniatures instead.
    - Early prototypes were made with existing GW miniatures and painted.
    - The prototype play mats were printed on canvas and looked awesome.

Some time ago, before being this interview published, I found in my personal archive a couple of MB catalogues showing a picture of Battle Masters game prototype. Probably this prototype was not one of the earliest ones, I guess it was just the very final promotional prototype for photography sessions, following the same concept of prototypes we know from HeroQuest and Space Crusade, however I would like to share with you some pictures that I took, which I think contains interesting details, some of them floating over my mind since much time ago.

I own an important deck of Din-A4 MB catalogues in my personal collection, but as said, only two of them showed pictures of the prototype, the rest showed the well known retail version of the board game. The two catalogues are from year 1992, one is in German, and the other in Spanish, but both show the same prototype picture in double-page format:

MB_Catalogues_EU_1992.jpg

MB_Catalogue_Germany_1992_BattleMasters_1.jpg

In a first sight you can observe that the miniatures look the same plastic ones as the final version, but the play mat art is not exactly the same as the retail product, and making some zoom in the picture we can see interesting details, which I describe as follows.

Hexagon terrain tiles artworks are also different than retail version. The flags of some units are also rather different than the retail ones, but others not:

MB_Catalogue_Germany_1992_BattleMasters_2.jpg

Cannon tiles artworks also show some differences compared with the retail version of the game. We can also see in the following picture that HeroQuest combat dice were used fot the photo shooting, instead of the red dice finally included in the Battle Masters box... interesting detail, could it mean that BM combat rules were different in early prototypes and closer to the HeroQuest ones? What do you think?

MB_Catalogue_Germany_1992_BattleMasters_3.jpg

And finally for me the most interesting detail about this picture... if you zoom in the bottom-right corner of the picture you could see some cards much different than the ones included in the retail version of the game:

MB_Catalogue_Germany_1992_BattleMasters_4.jpg

All of this is speculation from my side, but this cards display suggests me that the prototypes could have had two different decks of cards, one blue coloured and the other orange coloured, and probably each colour belonged to one of the armies, and maybe each player drawed the cards from a different deck, instead of drawing them from the same deck like in the final version.Well, who knows, but that's what came to my mind.

But for me the bigger key point that can be observed in these prototype cards are the artworks shown... the blue one in the front shows a kind of repeating bolt thrower war machine crewed by two eleven footmen. The blue card in the back is hidden but I think it is slightly seen in its upper left corner a elven swordman silouette, so maybe this card represented a kind of elven infantry unit. Below, can be observed an orange card showing a cannon, which suggests that it is the Mighty Cannon included in the final version and represented by the miniatures of this picture, which are the same ones as retail, but wait... this cannon is crewed by a dwarf!! In the other hand, in the top of the orange deck of cards can be observed a mounted knight, which looks like the Citadel Chaos Knights miniatures from the late 80's, the same knight shown in the orange card at the back of the cannon one so... could this mean that this orange cards represented the Chaos Army units, and they owned a cannon crewed by Chaos Dwarves? or could these orange cards represent the Imperial Knights and Mighty Cannon units but they used chaos artworks... and what about the blue cards? Were they good elves or dark elves? The most famous miniature of repeating bolt thrower at late 80's was crewed by Dark Elves, however it is true that also a rare one was crewed by Sea High Elves...

Anyway, the point for me is: existed plans to include any kind of ELVES or DWARVES in the Battle Masters board game during its design process? existed plans to include war machines in both armies? well... attending to the info we know about the prototypes, now I think why not...

Also of course interesting to see that the cards showed a black icon representing the unit... why repeating the unit as an icon in the same picture of the card?? Another incognita...

I the next post I will share some pictures of how these miniatures could have looked like from the Citadel Miniatures catalogue...

There are different flags and art in the European version of the Battle Masters game (including the expansions) and the US version. Some of these different flags were actually released in the expansions. The only clear difference I can see is the mat art and the cards themselves.

In early Warhammer Fantasy Battle game (1st-3rd edition) regiments of mercenaries or allied contingents of different races were very common, in 4th edition WH onwards allied army unit lists diminished drastically and became more which different armies would fight alongside each other rather than embedded units of different races. it looks like the dwarf cannon and sea elf bolt thrower were drawn directly from those early ally contingent lists, (not to mention orcs& goblins and Ogres fighting alongside with Chaos warriors and Beastmen) yet more proof that Battlemasters is just Warhammer lite marketed to the board game crowd.

Please, do you have all those flag differences identified? It would be interesting to see them.

I pulled down my games and the expansions for a look, and while the expansions themselves do have different unit names and stickers from the base games, sadly the "new" flags are only on the prototype game photo used in the ad sheet and catalog and do not have unit names, just unit type.
The U.S. version of Battle Masters has different flags and unit name stickers than the European version, and I have heard tell that the German 'Die Claymore Saga' version also has different unit names and stickers (not approximate translations but entirely new) and I assume other language translations likely do as well, so it is still possible those different prototype photo flags stickers were distributed somewhere. Seems I just remembered them from the advertisement sheet.

Not sure, but I guess those flags were just used as prototypes and not included in any retail edition of the game. Anyhow I will investigate it.

About the missing unit names in different languages, you are lucky :-), I invite you to check this other Inn's thread I have just created including the full list: viewtopic.php?f=207&t=6831

They're not perfect but you could print out customer stickers based on cleaned up versions of the photos of the "new" flags... and print labels with the new names too!

The set I purchased was in poor shape sticker wise, with many damaged or missing, so I took the liberty of printing out scans or fan-creations on sticker paper.

Both the expansion boxes cover photos show prototype flags similar but not the same to what was included. The box sides art /photos shows correct unit flags

I would like to confirm that, as far as I have checked, US and UK retail editions of BattleMasters included the same flags and shields for all units.

I have not seen any difference despite maybe a slight difference in colour tones or colour brightness, but that's all.

You have to look very close to spot the differences in the Prototype flags in the expansions but they are there. Here I have laid out the actual flags against the prototype photo on the box cover for comparison:

IMG-5509.jpg

Garack Tor's Ogre Mercenary flag has pink sun on box instead of yellow on sticker
Arak Enim, Lord of Chaos has blue design on flag but sticker is black/green, box shows purple/green pennant while actual sticker is blue/green
Clawfeet's Chaos Beastmen checkers are black and sun yellow while sticker is green/lemon yellow (plus shield stickers are different)
Morgrin Lord of Chaos both flag sticker and lance pennant have more black lines detailing than box photo flags
others are same or not shown no comparison possible.

IMG-5508.jpg

all actual Empire unit stickers have wide red borders while the box prototype flags show a blue border
Lord Ensgore's lance pennant has red cross that is white on box photo

also there are a few subtle differences in the main Battle Masters game flags from the US version and the UK version such as the border color of the Lord Knights (and lion/background colors reversed) or Flag borders Champions of Chaos, and Gazkull's orcs flags. We know they had different sticker sheets because obviously the different movement tray stickers/names. I forgot to take pictures of reverse color tower flags between two versions too.
IMG-5510.jpg

IMG-5511.jpg

I do not know if the completely different advertisement photo prototype flags for the main game got included in any other language box or versions, or if other versions had different stickers beyond the subtleties shown here or the obvious language differences for unit names
IMG-5464.jpg

however, all of the side box art/photos show the correct flags inside for each version sometimes contradicting the cover photo

Thank you for all the content about Battle Masters
Is there a chance anybody has recreated the original map in a format usable for printing?

Not ready-to-go. I have a version of the map in the link in my signature, but it is the whole map in one image. To print, it would need to be broken up into smaller pieces.
