yeah, I would've guessed a dwarf with a tipped over mug also.
I do have one question...what does the gargoyle have, the on in the bottom left corner?

Looks great, though. You are a beast with getting new icons into heroscribe. Thanks a lot
for putting that together. I love it.

That's supposed to be a whip! I see I'm gonna need to retouch it a bit. Thanks anyway for your words torilen, I'm glad you're enjoying this update.
I've also added some popup giving the reason why HeroScribe won't run (Objects.xml errors, basically) or why won't it open a quest (missing icons, out of border offsets, wrong code etc.).

Derfel Link wrote:Eheh, thing is you're not the first one to point that out! I wonder what's the best mini-icon for an armband.

Try adding a second armband behind--they come in pairs. Another option would be to make it cleave on the convex side, but that probably won't show on the clarity test.

Some other comments:

  • I don't feel the Gargoyle with greaves passes the clarity test well, particularly the small section behind. Perhaps more strap, or make the "X" orientation more vertical to reflect better the position they are worn.
  • The Chaos Warrrior's armor seemed too busy in the clarity test, in my opinion. Maybe reducing it to just a breastplate would help, so it doesn't cover so much of the Chaos Warrior's helmet.
  • The Orc's coin pile seems to get lost in the clarity test. Try reducing the coins and make them larger.
  • I think that Fimir looks like a nerd with that symmetrical scroll tacked on the end of his nose. Slanting it could help. Also, keep the band, but lose the crossed ties.
  • As for slanting weapons, I see your point about overall presentation and clarity. Only angle the Longsword to accentuate it's length and differentiate it from the Broadsword.

I hope some of these prove useful. Outstanding work, yet again!

I agree 99% with you except for armbands as they don't always come in pairs, like the Arm Band of Healing I was referring to :D but I do agree there should be both of them.
As for the other comments, I do like every suggestions you've made with an exception here too: I think I'm going to add a 4th category (besides Weapon, Armour and Ability/Rank/Class/Whatever - still searching for a good name for that!) featuring slanted weapons; it's going to be the master who decides whether to keep in mind which weapons can attack diagonally, having them not cover the icon beneath, otherwise he's going to use the slanted category, which could cover a bit (that leads me to ask you what weapon mini-icons you think could be choosed to be able to attack diagonally from this list - I'm underlining what I think can end in the slanted weapon list - bow, broadsword, cleaver, crossbow, curved sword, flail, halberd, hand axe, knife, labrys / battle axe, longbow, longsword, magic staff, magic wand, short sword, shortbow, spear, spiked club, spiked mace, war hammer, war schyte, whip, wooden club).
I've thought about it and that seems to be the best way to get rid of the question.
By the way, thanks again Daedalus and the others for the helping me out.

EDIT
Here's an idea I took from the german HeroQuest dice:

Another question, I think I'm going to use the same color setup for both the european and american layouts, since they look more prominent over the green monster icons:

What do you guys think? Is that ok? Thanks.

Have a look at this, Sjeng.
Cheers

EDIT
I've finally added the beta version icons in HeroScribe, here's an original quest fulled with miniIcons:

Image

Offsets are approximate and could use a selective fix - please suggest any, if you find an uncentered icon (like: "I'd move the bracers a bit lower", or "I'd reduce the war schyte's size").
Thank you guys!

You may have already done this before, but would it be worth including a Spiked Gauntlet as a weapon? Another question is what do you do with a monster that fights with two weapons/attacks--is it a rank/class ability, or do you ignore it and up the Attack dice like AtOH does with the Ogre Chieftan and Ogre Lord?

A coulple of late suggestions:

  • Narrow the magical cloak/cape a bit. I'm not sure if it needs black inside the hood--it's kinda spooky to me.
  • Reflect/flip the head of the Flail to the right or bring it down or left out of the mummy's face. Maybe shrink the head of the Flail.
  • The Crossbow could nudge to the right a bit to get the crosspiece out of the face.
  • Would reflecting/flipping the Whip down so that the handle was up help? What about making it verticle? Not sure.
  • Try reducing the blade of the Cleaver a bit so that the handle appears longer.

Having a fouth catagory for diagonally-attacking weapons does solve things, but don't let my suggestions push you too far if you really don't think they are needed (no one else has commented). You're probably right that an Evil Wizard already has enough information in the description of a weapon. Primarily, I want a Broadsword and a Longsword to be easily recognized as different weapons. You can best judge the usefulness of the diagonal addition for the icons. If you think it's needed--great! If not, I promise not to cry too long.

The North American rules include the Longsword as a diagonally-attacking weapon. You could include the Spiked Gauntlet--I don't play the European rules, however. The Hand axe presents a problem, as it may be thrown diagonally, but can't be used diagonally when making regular adjacent attacks. I think a Magic Wand could attack diagonally, as it uses LOS (right?). Maybe those diagonally-attacking weapons that are exclusive to the European (or NA) rules should noted with an asterisk and a note or something.

Just a word for anyone who happens by this thread and is unfamiliar with the concept of these icons:
These icons will normally be used sparingly to indicate a few specially equipped monsters. Not used on every single monster in a quest. The American map kind of gives the wrong impression, but without making tonnes of showcase maps how else can you visualise them?

Derfel, I believe keeping the colour of the mini-icons black for the American version is fine. It will help in making the special monsters stand out on the map and the mini-icons easily identifiable against the monster icons. The coloured dice is also a great idea. Now I have yet another good reason to get a set of each. You should post them on the German forum, as they use the coloured dice more than any one else.

Um...question. What's the deal with these colored german dice? I don't remember seeing anything about those anywhere.
Could someone explain please?

@ Derfel Link-
My feeling is black mini-icons over black icons is best for the American version. I'm guesing green on green for the European version would work as well.
