I have to admit that *IF*, and it seems more and more likely, the UK expansions are to eventually be released, I for one am looking forward to comparing the AH versions to Phoenix's efforts. I suspect that we will see more tweaking than we did with FH and MotM, simply for practical reasons associated with updating to the current (2021) US version of the game.

I have been cautiously optimistic, and more than a little curious to see what could be done with them. For context, I never owned any version of the UK expansions, and while I've had digital copies of Phoenix's work for years, I've never played them.

Also, if sizing is an issue, you can download my original board scan on this site HERE, resize it and print it out so it reflect 25mm squares, as others have done.

Although I would still advise if financially possible, supporting the new release.

Re: Heroquest remake by Hasbro - The BIG discussion thread

This weekend is being celebrated in Madrid (Spain) the event Interocio 2023. It is a fest dedicated to board games where hobby shops and manufacturers show their products and new creations to the public. Of course the event includes lots of gaming tables, crowded of people like most of this kind of events. I visited the event this morning. Adult entrance ticket cost is 12€/day.

It is not a mega event, so there are more shops than manufacturers stands, but fortunately Hasbro was there, and also HeroQuest.

The HeroQuest area included some real size elements like a door and a fireplace, and a real-size section of the game's board, to emulate a live-action game of HeroQuest, with giant combat dice (the classic ones!) and real-size weapons and so on. Basically prepared for kids who followed the guidelines and rules explained by a Hasbro organizer who played as Zargon. Equipment like real size swords and shields were available, also a real treasure chest and a throne. Doors positions could be changed along the real size board and Monsters were represented by big cardboard figures, I think it is a nice idea.

About gaming, there were two tables dedicated to HeroQuest in the Hasbro stand, each one with one different Hasbro employee as Zargon player. Once I was there one of the parties of Heroes were playing The Trial and the other one was playing a demo game the organizers designed just for the event, to allow a fast game of around 20 minutes (just 3 or 4 rooms dungeon size). I rapidly noticed it was not an official quest since I saw onto the board two doors next to each other as a two-square door, so I asked there which quest they were playing, so they explained it to me :-)

About trading I think apparently only Spanish Game System and Spanish Mage of the Mirror could be bought in the Hasbro stand (I asked for Return of the Witch Lord one, but they didn't have it). Game System box cost there was 115 €. As special offer they give you a Rogue Heir of Elethorn box (of course in English) if you buy one of the other boxes, which I think is a good offer.

I explored the whole exhibition and showcases at Hasbro stand and I didn't found nothing new, just some opened boxes of GS and MotM showing their content. No extra information about anyone of the incoming expansions Rise of the Dread Moon nor Prophecy of Telor.

Here you have some pictures that I took:

Oh wow... my dream for a long time has been to see live action HeroQuest (with giant pieces and costumed players like chess in the park). I'm so sorry that I don't live close by to visit such an event. Videos... there must be videos of this (I've only seen a few second clip of a visitor walking through the "doorway."

Looks like they are playing the Brazilian version (with cardboard stand ups). Still, how cool is that?? ;)

That looks like a really great event HispaZargon.

I'm not heading to any cons stateside this year, but I hope Hasbro does something similar for NA.

Thanks for sharing your pics.

Regarding the future (as of yet not explicitly announced) ATOH and WOM remakes, I think putting in a note about "Scalable difficulty" would be great. This would work both for fans wanting to play it according to the ("easier") EU rules and also those playing it with beefed up characters after having completed some of the other tougher expansions. Short of doing a digital supplement like "Into the Northlands" they could put this into the actual quest book(s).

I think though that even just the baseline update from Phoenix's versions will make these quite difficult. Adding some new Alchemist Shop(s) and some "new" artifacts (even if they are just more spell scrolls again similar to what was done in KK/ROTWL) would finish them up, to my view and they would still sell even outside Europe!

So probably "if the heroes are fully equipped, having completed many other quests, use the advanced rules..." or something like that. We see the new update on the HQ Companion App ads toggles to buff monsters (making them target weaker characters, having skeletons that can attack diagonally and goblins that can move attack and then move again, adding 1 BP, 1 MP, 1 Defend and 1 Attack die to all monsters and doubling a wandering monster.. which in these packs would make them quite numerous indeed!).

Probably a clarification on the "If these quests are played as a series" optional rule. I assume it would play out such that if Zargon wishes to disallow visits to the Alchemist Shop and Armory between quests of the campaign played in order (meaning you could only visit it at the start and the end of each pack; or in the case of a Total Party Kill where you had to replay I suppose) then give them the "big potions" that restore all Body Points (and maybe all Mind Points too?) instead. Then again shopping is fun. In the original European versions there were no alchemist shops and if you were playing these after completing the original 14 quests (and probably KK & ROTWL as well) you'd already have all the equipment you could possibly want and have nothing really to shop for, the gold just being a kind of "high score" (and just in case some hero dies his comrades could spend some gold to get his equipment back up to snuff perhaps, assuming they "left the quest" together I guess? Seems there's plenty of leeway for Zargon to interpret it how he wishes there).

Re: Heroquest remake by Hasbro - The App

Postby Shijuro » April 19th, 2023, 7:36 am

The Companion App has worked well so far with classic Heroquest, enabling my wife and I to play without a Zargon player. An update last month enabled landscape mode, which makes it all much easier to see (even when shared with the TV).

They updated the app this week "with numerous fixes and improvements:
  • Fixes for the Witch Lord and Frozen Horror Bugs & Crashes
  • Corrections to the Ancient Staff behavior
  • A new CANCEL option if you accidentally die in rock
And added options in the Settings Menu to control Zargon difficulty & AI behavior. "

The "difficulty and behavior" toggles are:
  • Monsters Attack Weak - presumably, they go for the weakest hero now (instead of always attacking Barbarian given the chance).
  • Advanced Goblins - allows them to attack in the middle of their move (e.g., move 6, attack, retreat 4) so they no longer block their buddies)
  • Advanced Skeletons - allows them to attack diagonally with those big scythes
  • Double Wandering Monsters - when "Wandering Monster" button is pressed, adds two of the current wandering monsters instead of one
  • Monsters +1 Body Points
  • Monsters +1 Mind Points
  • Monsters +1 Attack
  • Monsters +1 Defend

Issues:
  • It still seems to refer to the Chaos, er, Dread spell "Escape" as "Tempest" when cast.
Otherwise, seems pretty stable.
