Well simulating HQ combat dice on a standard D6 would be as follows:

three numbers = Skull (1, 2 or 3)
two numbers = white shields (4 or 5)
one number = black shield (6)

If someone is worried about pips making a side heavier or lighter (which shouldn't happen on standard machine produced dice), the idea of having the faces painted on would seem to negate any argument there, even more than having the arabic numerals inscribed on the sides. Any differences would be negligible unless there was a huge bubble in one corner of the die or lead inside some of the pips but not others.

Unless you're doing the casino rules with swapping out razor sharp cubes every so often, it's pretty silly. You're playing a fantasy game for fun. People who don't roll adequately can remedy that by just rolling better. Don't have to use dice towers even, just roll rather than drop the dice out of your hand an inch flat to the table.

One of the Best gaming experiences I ever had was when starting a new group, the DM just GAVE everyone a set of their own dice, to KEEP! It was such a thoughtful gesture, I carry on the tradition today.

Another thing to remember is that poor rolls make for exciting stories. Yes, ideally, all our dice would be statistically "perfect," if that's even a thing. But whiffing a crucial roll to behead the BBEG can make a session laat forever in the minds of players. Especially if the DM can narrate the flub in a creative way.

Very key sentence: "Narrating the flub in a creative way..." I've noticed that myself is a great source of fun. Even though we're just throwing out (imperfectly) random numbers, the anticipation and the creativity off the cuff makes it worthwhile.
