Finally a use for the Remake "Mystery" Tile (Game System)?

Postby Kurgan » April 10th, 2022, 11:50 am

I was just thinking, the unexplained bonus tile depicting "Mentor's Seal/Zargon's Seal" with the purple background included with the 2021 remake edition could be used as a status tile for a buff/nerf, placing it underneath a designated miniature.

For example...

Hero is under "Command" spell.

Monster (or Hero) is under effect of "sleep."

Character is under "Tempest" (loses a turn).

Hero has "courage" on them, or Rock Skin or potion effect that lasts one turn or more...

Granted, it would only be one character at a time, and any tile could serve this function but it's a unique one. The bone pile and statue from KK & ROTWL could serve a similar purpose.

Not necessarily what they intended, but just a thought. The previous was that it was like a "coin" to flip for stuff needing a 50% chance (though you could use dice for this as well). Or a blind pass to see who gets to control Zargon (Mentor side means hero, zargon side is the evil wizard role).

I usually place the spell card in front of the player who is affectetd by the spell to remember it.
I prefer to think at the seal as a coin, to dertermine who's right or not in case of dispute beetween heroes and Zargon!
There is also the possibility they will be required, together with the new gate-windows and the bone tiles in some online quest they will post later.

Good thoughts there too. I tend to do the same thing with either a white die (skull = yes, anything else = no) or red die (odd/even number).

It could simply be a "proof of purchase" as well. Other creative uses possible... back in the day I speculated that it could represent the "Star of the West" from the Game System lore, or even the "Dread Star Amulet" artifact invented by Stephen Baker for his bonus "training quest: Rogar's Hall" released during the pledge drive. Or as a marker to keep track of whose turn it was in a game...

The idea that it has no meaning but what your GM imagination decides is probably the "right" answer. |_P

I love that idea -- using the icon tile/token to note a spell effect.

I'm still at a loss for how to use the reverse-side of the wide block tile; the one that looks like a sewer grate. At first, I was thinking "Sewer Grate", but that only looks right if the tile was standing upright and not flat. Oddly enough, it looks neat when placed next to each other, forming what looks like a large covered pit.

The Bone Pile from Return of the Witch Lord looks neat. I can see it being used as ether an impassable square or rough ground to make movement harder. I can also see it used as a Gauntlet-styled Skeleton Generator. I like the idea of it being used as rough ground, in which case, that would require a lot more Bone Pile tiles.

The Stature tile from Kaller's Keep would have been great as a set of 3D furniture, but not as a flat tile, as an Evil Wizard Player cant wrong with statures. (Although, I have no use for that tile as I have my own set of stone and bronze statures made from some Battle Masters Chaos Warriors.)

As nice as it would have been to have new tiles in KK and RotWL by using the underside of the established tiles, I can totally see how the black blank-sides could be used as dark areas beyond the heroes torchlight, like in that new Quest: Forsaken Tunnels of Xor-Xel. Although, one major issue with that is having to always update the map with a lot of black tiles. (Although, if I really wanted black tiles for darkness, I can make my own)

The possibilities for their uses are endless.

Yeah originally they were just blank (black), so they're like space filler graphics. The grates remind me of the ones you see on the cover of Return of the Witch Lord, but no practical way those would fit into the default quests, so we use our imagination!
