Saw it elsewhere ages ago. Liked the idea. Less crammy

The rocks are finally all glued. :) This was tedious but worth it.
Few more stages to go. Have to sand them all down and label them. Add some grey paint around the rims. Glue sand to the tops. Build a case to hold them all.

Painted the edge of the wood base grey to lessen the contrast against the rocks

Sanding went through 3 stages. 80 grit on a sanding belt to do the bulk of the sanding, followed by hand sanding with 150 grit then finally 220 grit to smooth out the underside

Labeled the corners of each piece of where it goes

Well that was just stupid luck. After jigsawing the placement of all of the pieces for a hour, an old utensil case I gutted and resurrected a couple months ago was the perfect size for these rocks. only enough room for a 1x1 square left so super stoked on how it all fits.

Adding a slurry of 2 kinds of sand, wood glue, water, drop of detergent and a couple drops of black paint and started adding it to the rock pieces to add some grime and texture

Way too much effort than I would be willing to put in, but undoubtedly cool-looking. I think it would be even cooler to have tall blocks of stone (like legos) that would "drop down" into the "floor" as you moved around (and made out of a stone-looking but light/soft material, maybe wood), but that would be even more work potentially. Thanks for sharing!
