As iconic the HQ bases are, they were always terrible. Heck, even the original prototypes used round bases.
The only way to add new miniatures into the game, was to either use different bases or murder a goblin.
This is one point where I think HQ20 is actually improving upon the original.
100% disagree. Round bases may be "standard" in popular miniatures today, but squares bases are still widely available. Reaper sells them, every major game shop (that was still open before Covid19) carried them. It's not like they would have to climb Mt. Doom to forge new ones. Its true that "Facing the enemy" doesn't matter at all in this game, but that also means there's no need to have the ability to "rotate" the character. Square bases fit the squares on the board. They could have done a "circles" board, but they didn't. Anyway, it's not a huge deal, but again, a nod to the original that would have required zero effort and zero extra cost.
We don't have nostalgia for the prototypes because nobody had them all these years to play with outside of Gamesworkshop designers.
I also actually think the elemental spell backgrounds are much better than the original. They seem much more wild and intimidating.
I agree they look very cool. Awesome, even. However the actual spells are pretty weak sauce compared to what we see. Ball of Flame, the strongest fire spell, has a chance to do up to 2 Body Points of damage, which doesn't kill a Chaos Warrior (3 Body Points). Yet the images show these Elementals, not just standing there looking menacing, but toppling buildings, destroying towns, crushing castles, etc. It would be like an image of the Barbarian cutting a watchtower in half with his broadsword or the Wizard blowing up a mansion with his staff... looks cool but way out of the scale of power of the actual gameplay.
The cards to me are better than the minis. The minis look cool but many of them don't look like they fit together and with this game, etc. Dynamic and detailed? Absolutely, but that's not all that matters. These are what we're going to be staring at for countless hours while playing, not keeping them in a display case. Then again maybe people here would do that, put these on display painted and use the regular minis to play. Who knows.
