Does anybody know who painted the board for the original HeroQuest?

Just wondering... :geek:

Ah you mean the original cardboard board... if there is one place to find out it might be here. :-)

Yes the fold-out board (which that ONE friend always folded the wrong way, making it crease! Thanks a lot Niels!)

According to a video at garychalkillustration.com, Gary Chalk did boards for both Space Hulk and Advanced HeroQuest. In another video interview, he tells that he did the game board for Talisman. Knowing that, my guess would be Gary Chalk did the Hero Quest gameboard, as well.

In the thread about the "prototype" game shown in the tv commercials and shown on the back of the Game system box, people were comparing that board to AHQ. Maybe Chalke did that one too? But the final version, no idea.

Just reading myself and realized only now the corrector did some mistakes...

Anyway, I doubt it was painted by the same artist who painted the advanced HQ tiles, the style is very different.
MB worked with great artists (Les Edwards for example) which were not involved with Games Workshop.
I found more similarity with Ghost Castle artworks.

What do you think of the artwork on the "prototype" board (featured on the back of the box).

As in here

I thought the AHQ tiles art resembled the artwork in the Marvel Winter Special. This style isn't quite so cartoony, but less realistic (oil painting-like) as the final board. What do you think?

I've said before: The prototype board feels more like AHQ and Space Hulk of the day. (I haven't really gotten a close look at the Space Crusade board…) I'm pretty sure those are the same style. The final HQ board looks like a different style.

I think the final product was an improvement on the prototype in pretty much every way (which is not surprising as that’s the intention for prototypes of course). We got a better board, doors, furniture than in the pic you just posted. Some people debate that one or two of the prototype figures were nicer though...
