Have any of you guys used morcar expansion spells in the base game? Also do you guys use the upkeep rules for Mercenaries.

We've used the WoM spells for the elf/wizard a couple of times. Anything in particular you want to know?

I would definitely use the upkeep for mercs.
It's one of the only money sinks in the game. You don't want the heroes running around with an entire army anyways.

Would the spells make the base quests a lot easier? Or are they at about the same level as the original spells?

And so the wom 10 gold upkeep isn't a good idea and you have them rehired?

Not really. As long as you don't start house ruling that spells can be recycled and reused you shouldn't have any problems swapping spells.
If you have a group that goes through all the campaigns you might want to save them for later as a kind of advancement for the heroes.
"You've now defeated the Witch Lord, you gain access to 3 new spell decks"

Mercs:
I think I was up too late when I commented on them... In my midnight madness I thought NA mercs were just bought once and that was that. So here we go again:
I prefer the NA version where you must rehire them from game to game at a full cost. Like I said, money sink. The upkeep of 10 gold is too cheap, and it takes more bookkeeping.

I agree. The only reason to use the upkeep 10 gold is the heroes tactically trying to keep their mercs alive so that they are cheaper.
But it's firstly illogical, secondly the heroes have kept making shitloads of money through 5 quest packs at this point,
thirdly the heroes' having to pay full hire before each quest makes for more fun.

Besides if you hire them from quest to quest you are more free to try out more combos.
How about 4 crossbowmen for this quest?
3 scouts and a swordsman this time? Sure.
Nah, Just a single scout this time.

When I run a game, I never target a Merc if I can instead attack a Hero (with the lowest BP). I still manage to kill all the mercs, every time.

I had an encounter where the heroes took on 6 evil mercs (2 swordsmen, 2 halberds, 2 scouts) with NA body/mind point stats (2/2 each) and rolling white shields for defense. The mercs held their own for while, and almost killed the barbarian.

What I thought was going to be a brief scuffle turned into a minor battle.

With some crossbowmen, who knows, the mercs may have scored a kill.

Make a quest where the mercs are lured by chaos and betrays the heroes halfway through!
The more they bought the more they are being punished!

:dwarf: Ya sure brought a lot of mercenaries Éloriêl!
:elf: Yes! I won't have to lift a finger!
:barbarian: Gettin' a bit crowded dont'cha think?
:wizard: OoOoOoh I don't mind! Ho ho ho ho!

*ominous chanting ensues*

:elf: What are you doing? Get away from me! GET AWAY! AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHH!!!

You know, I think I have heard that record way back during the acid house period...
