How do you handle Fear vs Courage

[This topic was moved from Board index ‹ HeroQuest Rooms ‹ General HeroQuest Discussion on 6/30/17.]

I did some searching but didn't find anything concrete abut a ruling between these two. The YeOlde Inn's FAQ provides a suggestion but that's all it is, a suggestion. It's up to Zargon how these two spells resolve when conflicting with each other. I'm not looking for opinions or suggestions, rather, I'm curious as to how we've all finally decided (or how we would decide) to handle the matter. I'm referring the US version of the spell, not any other. For reference, here's the wording to both...

(Chaos Spell) Fear - This spell causes any one hero to become so fearful that his attacks are reduced to one combat die. The spell can be broken by the hero on a future turn by rolling one red die for each of his mind points. If a 6 is rolled, the spell is broken.

(Hero Spell) Courage - This spell may be cast on any one hero, including yourself. The next time that hero attacks, he may roll two extra combat dice. The spell is broken the moment a hero can no longer "see" a monster.

What did you decide?

Wouldn't matter order in which spells are cast. They each specify what their affect is. Chaos spell reduces the Hero's normal combat to 1. The Hero spell raises it back up to 3.

I would rule the Courage spell cancels the Fear spell. No further effect, discard the cards. but that is just my take

There's no cancelling each other as a given, but a cumulation of effect.
It depends on the order of the spells being cast:
a - first Fear, then Courage - 3 Attack Dice
b - first Courage, then Fear - 1 Attack die, which in this case means Fear does cancel out Courage

I do not see how rules would work any other way.
A spell is cast and takes effect as per its wording, then another is cast and takes effect as per its wording.

If Courage is broken before Fear, Fear still has effect: 1 Attack die.
If Fear is broken before Courage, Courage still takes effect: your "regular" Attack dice + 2.

Agreed. There's no ambiguity here, 1+2=3.

Care to explain how you get to that conclusion?

Fear reduces to 1 and then courage increases to 3.

Yeh, but not if first Courage and then Fear take effect.
