Has anyone created a system to use them effectively?

I recall that Slev integrated the colored combat dice into Heroquest Revised. For something more recent, Kurgan may have a word or two to share about them.

Thanks so much for all your help. I accidentally found the scrolling through here. I have been coming here for a long time but never really checked out the forums until recently. This has always been a great site for content and printouts. Now I would like to contribute back to the site. Helping to promote the site seems like a way to do that.

I don't use all of the colors of the German dice, but use black for stronger attacks, green for stronger hero dice and blue for stronger monster dice in my upgrade system here. They represent increased skill (higher probabilities of success) from veteran heroes or elite monsters. They can also be used to give perks to certain pieces of equipment. |_P

Presti70, an Italian Heroquester use a simple rule:
The hero has a pouch with colored combat dice iside, the hero may chose to use one of the combat dice but once used, it goes to Zargon, so also Zargon can use it durin a following turn of his.
I pefer to use them with special skills cards or new weapons.

I've got different colored dice set up for different purposes...black is a strong attack with little defend...
yellow offers more skulls on one side, orange on two sides, red offers even more skulls. Things like that.
I've not implemented them in any games yet, even though I would love to do so.

My thread here: viewtopic.php?f=182&t=5323&p=102634#p102634
Offers a couple of pictures explaining it better. I actually created cards to take the place of the
combat dice, since colored combat dice are pretty hard to get one's hands on.

When I dig out the colored dice I allow the Barbarian to roll Black Dice to attack.

If anyone else wants to use them, they must also defend with them. (Northern Wasteland Barbie can use the Regular Dice to defend)

Yes it makes the Barbarian a bit more of a bad ass....but if I am digging out the colored dice things are getting really difficult so let it go....the heroes need what ever help they can muster. That is when I have Champion Monsters that defend on White Shields and the Boss will defend on any Shield. (don't worry, the heroes likely have a few weapons that roll the purple dice, so they are up to the task)

I see that that German guy is selling the alternate Zargon dice again (same faces as the white dice, but red with gold markings or pink with black markings), in addition to the usual HQ dice variants. I asked him about custom BattleMasters dice (which would be the same as the Green "key dice" more or less, but he said there wasn't a high enough demand for them. Then again, you could easily use the red "Zargon dice" for BM, but it would double the length of battles by doubling the defense!
