Behold! Heroquest box V2

Since making my first box a few years ago I’d made some new things for my game and eventually run out of space. So this new box is at least an inch wider, longer and taller, so most importantly it now accommodates my new gameboard. It’s mostly constructed of balsa wood so without all the contents it’s pretty lightweight, hopefully the edges, corner supports and the struts inside make it strong enough for cats to sit on. I also had to rip off the decorative strips of my old box to make this new one.

I got the colour by spraying it with matt black enamel then painting with red acrylic, with a tonne of iridescent medium mixed in. Then the whole things covered in clear gloss varnish. The logo is made from crystal resin, I formed the mould for it with funky foam sheets, which was easy, but was a mistake because it took a few hours of hard grafting to scrape the funky foam off the resin.

I searched for months to find some perfect hinges, I wanted some really long ones that would wrap over the top of the box, but in the end I settled for these smaller ones that worked out alright. I wasted a lot of time on the curved plastic details on the corners, attempting to cut plastic without the proper tool was very frustrating. The key escutcheon was a lucky e-bay find as well. I considered putting in an lock, but decided it was more trouble than it would have been worth.

The top is mdf and the bottom is hardboard, there’s also, pine, balsa, plastic, metal, foam and fuzzy felt, all held together with PVA glue and a few pins.

Please let me know what you think. I put 80 hours work into it and only get to play Heroquest like twice a year :(

Wow! Fantastic!

How does that work? I don't see how you can close this without half of your stuff ending up upside down… the doors or the minis.

Thanks guys.

The figures do end up upside-down but they're held up by the foam strips.

Simply incredible! I must figure out how to do something like this myself! All the individualized compartments... top shelf work!

Love the quest book as well!
