[Tutorial] Custom miniature base with miliput !

Hi guys, I made a tutorial on how to produce custom miniature base with miliput.
Image

I took the opportunity to take pictures between each step. So you see how I do it better.
Image
There are enough for 4 bases.

Image
I cut a small part.

Image
I flattened it. The shape is elongated.

Image
I put it between the legs of the orc. Note the distance between the feet. This will help "push" the dough with your finger until it reaches the feet. Thus, it will not overflow.

Image
I pushed the miliput on one end.

Image
We continue with the other foot. Not more than 1 mm thick miliput eh!

Image
You will notice that I drive the surplus toward the outside of the base.

Image
This is most obvious here.

Image
I cut the excess with the blade of a knife. Be careful not to shred the plastic!

Image
The front is finished.

Image
Beginning of the back.

Image
Same process ...

Image
We always press the surplus to the outside of the base. I also flattened the middle between the two legs by slightly wetting the blade of the knife. I just then moved on the miliput with the flat of the blade. Wetting the blade allow to slide out without hooking the miliput.

Image
The finished base.

Image
Dip the cutter blade in water. The miliput is highly soluble, it allows the miliput not to hang with the blade.

Image
With the corner of the blade that is not sharp I streak the miliput to form the pavement.

Image
The pavement is finished.

Image
My tools for the relief of the pavement: two round brushes at the end. A "large" one and more "little" one.

Image
I start to stamp with the biggest on the surface.

Image
I finish with the smallest. Note that in some places, you'll have to redefine the pavement.

Image
The relief is finished !

There it is ! It seems easy, I assure you it is ! ;)

Hello Crix, no miliput goes rock solid after 'drying' by the air. In fact, you have two pasta and one is the solidifier of the other. In between, it is very flexible and soluble in water.

I ordered some from a local miniature modelshop. Can you show me how you paint it after it hardens? Do you basecoat it too, or do you just paint the colour directly on?

Hello, I basecoat it in chaos black. Then you just make several dry brush layers: a dark blue, blue, light blue (very little) and finish with a very very dry brush of white. I used enchanted blue.

BE careful with the dry brush because otherwise you'll end up with a base that looks like ice. In this case, simple apply a badab black wash. (You can also get it by watering down chaos black).

I just did 3 orc bases. Man, gotta tell you, it's not that easy. My fingers are huge! Can't really push the putty very well, so I'm forced to use a thin brush and "roll" the putty with the handle.
You really need to use plenty of water, it dries fast. I made 3 and the rest of the putty was unuseable, it kinda crumbled. So use very little at a time!
I'll post pictures as soon as I have them all done :) I need to finish 13 orcs, so 10 left! And then after they dry, I need to paint them of course.

edit: some prelimanary pics: I'm a bit sloppy, seeing my work close-up :P but I'll correct that on the next batch.

Here they are drying in the sun. Weather's great for painting outside in the garden today! :D
