New Equipment: The Explosive

The Dwarf received an explosive in one of my recent quests. It was fun to use so i thought i'd present it here.

The Explosive

As an Action, the Dwarf may place the explosive at a wall.
It goes up next time it is the Dwarf's turn.
If the Dwarf places it after his movement, it goes up after his next movement.
If he places it before his movement, it goes up before his next movement.

How to do that in detail?
You place the tile below with the white line on a wall.
All the models on red squares receive 2 BP of damage.
The wall disappears.
Furniture on red squares disappears.
All the rest of my rule shall just ensure that you can't use it as weapon like a thrown grenade: Everybody has one turn to get away, monsters as well.

If it is used in corners or on solid rock, you'd have to interpret that a little bit, i admit. Perhaps you can help me finding a good formulation.

However, you may not give it to the dwarf as general equipment as i can imagine some Quests are depending on a careful layout. So give it to him as findable object once in a while, like an artifact.

Here's a recent example where it has been used.
The overall effect was that the group saved 2 BP worth of fighting, likely saving one of them the life. Like a potion of healing, with more fun.

I take it blocked squares are taken into account as walls?
You could use the tiles from WoM that denote a hole in the wall to mark these exploded walls.
If only part of a piece of furniture is destroyed, does that mean you take the whole piece from the board? Then I would rule that any quest treasure to be found in that furniture is found within the next search fro treasure in that room, but only if it's a necessary artefact.

I can try to word that for you when I have more specifications or if someone is faster. |_P

For the moment I used them only in my online game so no issue with tiles.
For the real game board, one could imagine to have some broken wall markers, yes.

Blocked squares, why not removing them. If there is solid stone behind, the blocked square just gets moved one square. :)

Yes, for easy gameplay I would just remove the entire furniture piece. Treasure can still be found. It's not gone it's just spread over the room. :)

Yes I would be happy about some good wording. Currently it is so long that it fits only in the quest notes, nowhere else.

First Draft
(you need to mark one of the central red squares with an X or something, else the explanation of how to set the tile up will be ludicrously long)

Explosive
Instead of a regular action, the Dwarf may deposit an explosive against a wall adjacent to him.
The explosive tile is placed over a wall (with the square marked X being placed on the Dwarf's square), so that part its white line covers at least one square of wall on the game board.
After the Dwarf's next one movement and one action both, all red squares on the explosion tile are affected by the explosion.
The white line on the tile is now treated as if its complete length was covered by open doors and all connecting rooms and corridor sections are set up if they have not been before.
Every figure on a red square loses 2 Body points.
Every door on the tile and piece of furniture occupying at least one red square is taken from the game board immediately. The treasures contained within that furniture are spread around the room and can be found by th first hero who searches for treasure in that room.
A blocked square on a red square is moved onto the next square outside of the tile. If that square is occupied, treat the blocked square as a falling block trap triggered by the explosion.

Is everything covered? Should be cause it's pretty freakin' long.

This is pretty cool. I always support the addition of new powder weapons; fantasy gun control begone!

What happens if you blow up a piece of furniture that was trapped? While traps on cabinets and tables are very rare, it's possible that you hit a trapped treasure chest with the explosion. Does the trap go off or count as disarmed?

If Anderas uses my wording the trap will be gone along with the furniture.
Otherwise I can reword.

Maybe the backside of the new tile helps in the explanation :)
I think you already found quite good explanations for everything. Click for printable Big. :)

Turn the tile around so that the scorched part is visible. The two rooms count as one room now. If there was an undiscovered area behind the wall, place the contents of the room as if it had just been activated.

What do you think?

I'll probably incorporate this as some kind of advancement skill for one hero or another.
My proposed changes are purple, the unexplored thing is just a matter of taste, the central one square length is not elegant, but more concise. Centre would be interpretable as to its length. In the end, also matter of taste for most groups cause pretty much nobody will assume that you can set up the tile incongruously with the board game squares, and seeing the centre as all three square lengths will limit it more, so no harm done from the EWP's POV.

I've been trying to post here for a few days but real life has been getting in the way.

First up, I followed the pbp quest where you used this. It looks like a really fun addition to the game but could really ruin quests that have not been written with this item in mind.

Secondly, the wording of the rule as written here has the potential to be broken depending on what you think should happen next...

After the Dwarf's next one movement and one action both, all red squares on the explosion tile are affected by the explosion.

Consider the following examples.

  1. The dwarf moves into position and places the explosive. The dwarf is then killed after placing the explosive but before moving and performing an action
In this example the explosive never explodes.
  2. The dwarf moves into position and places the explosive. He has already searched the room for treasure, traps and secret doors and there are no monsters to attack
In this example the dwarf is unable to set off the explosive as he is not able to perform an action, fulfilling the criteria to explode the bomb
  3. The dwarf moves into position but refuses to move again for several turns
In this example the dwarf is able to prevent the explosion by refusing to move. Thematically this could work.

It all depends on exactly how you intend the explosive to work so these may not be problems at all. But to me, it seems like once the dwarf has spent an action to plant the explosive it should go off. My preferred choice would be at the beginning of the evil wizard players next turn as this is an event that is guaranteed to happen every round until the end of the game.

Any way this is a really nice item and I can see lots of potential for some interesting quest ideas/event planned around the use of the explosive.
