What are some other board games you enjoy? Non-HQish or same flavor.

Been playing Drakon with the kids lately. The youngest isn't quite HQ ready but she can play it. Also got some physical gwent cards and a game mat. Been nice change of pace for most of the family.

M.U.L.E. is a big hit in one of my groups. It's a pretty faithful adaptation of the old Atari/C64/NES game.
You are settlers on planet Irata. You are granted plots and must decide what to do with each plot. Farming? Wind energy? Mine for metal? Mine for crystals?
Each resource has a use in the game. Metal lets the city produce portable factories (MULEs). Energy lets you actually power your MULEs. Food determines the amount of actions you can take each turn. Only crystals are arbitrarily priced, making it a gamble to invest in.
There's a really clever system where the prices are adjusted according to supply and demand. If noone produces metal, prices will gradually skyrocket. A player can also refuse to sell his goods to drive prices up. But maybe the other players re-tool and go for metal too?
There's a lot of adjusting back and forth to follow the market. Great game.

Also if we move back in our miniature comfort zone, I can highly recommend Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire.
It's just good old fun. They market it as a competetive game - but one that has both cards and dice, so take that how you want.
The better player usually wins, but a less experienced player still have a chance.

2 of my friends loved Risk, it's had a lot of table time... I'll play it but I'd much prefer Axis & Allies (which I've only played 3 times). Game of Thrones was the main game of the group but we've not had many gatherings recently, babies being born!!!

Mitchie, we have similar tastes by the look of it. As well as Heroquest and Space Hulk, I regularly play Axis & Allies and Game of Thrones the boardgame (actually home-made variants of both of these).
We used to love Risk and that game is what started the move to more involved global conquest type games. Usually we build them ourselves to suit are particular nerd tastes.

I'm currently working on something slightly different; players take the role of a present day superpower and have to become the dominant force but at the same time not completely destroy the planet. I've had a lot of fun trying to model all the chaos of the modern world, complete with financial crashes, natural disasters, conflict zones, shock elections & referendums, terrorism & false flag operations, globalists trying to remove elected leaders and so on. About to embark on the play-testing phase soon.

I would thoroughly recommend Game of Thrones the boardgame, especially to people who like the cutthroat politics and general flavour of the TV series. Really requires 6 people though to make it truly epic.
