Might as well throw in actual fimirs at this point.

I guess these are exactly the two instances that Games Workshop have heavy reason/inclination to protect.
In all of the game of HeroQuest, the Fimir are the one original games Workshop invention in appearance and name, while the Chaos Warriors are in appearance combined with the name. The generic name, collocated from two regular words with at least one lexical meaning each that can not be protected by copyright in themselves, is also a debated issue.
Games Workshop, especially since 2011 or so, have been known to sue the asses of everyone using anything Games Workshop has used before, no matter whatsoever if it's under copyright or trademark or patent laws or anything. They just sue to intimidate and deter, and destroy new or week companies that way when they cannot afford lawyers. They sued the publisher of a novellist over the use of "Space Marine", unsuccessfully in legal context, but successfully in getting rid of competition. I know you like SpaceCrusade and Warhammer 40k, but don't say "Space Marine" too loudly.

P.S.: "Primordial Chaos Warrior" still uses chaos and warrior in that order, but as long as in the context of the game and the company GameZone it is always connected to that Primordial it will always be their "new" generic word combination forming new game terminology. That wouldn't be possible for Fimir, which has no lexical meaning outside of Games Workshop products.

P.P.S.: The characters you refer to, Morcar/Zargon, are firstly not Games Workshop product, but more likely Milton Bradley's, secondly they don't have appearance(s) - representative figures, that means in game; that's also in contrast to the Fimir.

At the end of june, E-minis the spanish editor of HeroQuest 25th with Gamezone Miniaturas will present the steps from nothing to the actual running project on a great video to Zaragosa.
Dionisio will answer the questions of the journalists and public.
The game itself won't be presented yet because not everything is finished and they do not want to show a early prototype.
Anyway you'll get a lot of explanations filmed in their studios so you will see what they have did those 5 last months, what is planed shortly and in brief, the real agenda of HQ25.
13 days to wait.
I translate the game in french as planed.

If by "our hobby" you mean an unrelated game, with different rules and quests, by an unrelated company, who had no part in making the original, trading on the goodwill of the same name, to which they have no rights, but have lied about having the rights, then I suppose you're right.

This hasn't anything more to do with HeroQuest than Descent has, or any of dozens of other dungeon crawlers released in the last quarter-century. It's just that none of the creators of those other games had the bare-faced cheek to take advantage of the goodwill of fans of the game by using its name without justification or permission.

Have one from me too |_P

I generally avoid rubbishing anything related to tin soldiers/dolly men online but I have to say that the look of the miniatures for this "25th anniversary" set looked like dung to me.

I wonder if it would ultimately be in one's best interest to make a completely new game that simply borrows influence from HeroQuest. There's a part of me that wants to do that.

Don't bother. It's called Dungeon Crawl by Biff from OldScratch's. He sells it ready-to-print.

Perhaps I missed it, but, am I right in thinking that we really DON'T know who legally owns the TM for this intellectual property?

Dungeon Crawl is just one example of what you can do. If you want to create your own game, go for it!
