Space Crusade/Space Hulk

I was just wondering, since I do not own a copy of Space Crusade or Space Hulk, is there a huge difference between the two? I'd like to pick up Space Crusade but a complete copy is just as expensive as a complete HeroQuest or sealed Space Hulk.

Is Space Crusade as fun as HeroQuest? Any and all input would be helpful.

Yes, there's a huge difference between SC and SH. They are two completely different games, with only the setting in common.
Most importantly SC is 1 vs 3 while SH is 1 vs 1.
SC is more action packed with lots of rolls and lots of kills.
SH is much more of a strategic/puzzle game. It's all about placement and direction.

Personally I think Space Crusade is absolutely just as fun as HeroQuest. BUT...
These two games has nothing in common.
SC is absolutely not a RPG. SC is NOT HQ in space.

I think the reason HQ got all the fame while SC is much more unknown is because SC is balanced around a certain setup.
You can't play SC with anything but 1 Alien player and 3 Marine Squads. A squad more or less totally destroys the score system.
You need to use a certain amount of monsters or again, the score system gets whacked.
In short: SC is not a good game for homebrewing and customization.

That being said. If you are okay with that it's an absolutely blast to play.
I'll say it's a "beer and pretzels" game. You sometimes fire ten shots and hit absolutely nothing - and then a couple of Gretchin headshot two of your marines the next turn.
Once you are into the basic rules it's really simple (just like HQ).

Anything in particular you want to know?

Huge difference between the 2. I have Space Hulk But not Crusade. Deathwing and Genestealer expansion too. I made this rule summary.

I'll grab a copy of Space Crusade 1 day.

I think I could play either game and love them both but I'm more pressured to get Space Crusade because there aren't too many copies floating around out there now a days. Both look fun as Hell to play.

I haven't played the original Space Hulk. Only the latest version so I'm in no condition to compare the rules.
What I hear though is that the rules in 1st are very good - 2nd not so good - 3rd goes back to the roots - 4th fixes a few mistakes from 3rd.

But the components in 3rd/4th are unparalleled. The tiles are so beautiful. Great vibrant art. Nice thick cardboard. They have even been embossed to create a pseudo 3D effect.
2nd edition also have some very nice tiles. They are Warhammer Quest level. Enough said.
1st edition tiles frankly look like garbage. Sorry...

As for the miniatures... 3rd/4th has these really beautiful super detailed dynamic models. They really *lemony goodness* all over the other editions. Except... In a game where facing is a thing, having dynamic poses isn't really that smart. This is my only complaint over 4th.
2nd has much more classic Terminators. They look really good but they just kinda "stand" there and point their guns. Which means they are perfect as the game pieces they are supposed to be.
1st edition... again, the marines just don't look very good.

So when I were in your situation a few years ago this was my logic:
Rules are #1 so 1st or 4th?
1st is the original classic, but with the expansions I've put myself in a Mage of the Mirror/Frozen Horror situation.
4th has better components in every way.

So if I'm only gonna own one version of SpaceHulk I'd rather have the one that looks good and where I won't have to go eBay hunting to get expansions.
To me 4th is the pinnacle of SH. You buy one great box and that's it. If you can't live with the dynamic Terminators, pick up a box of classic Terminators:

These are the same as in 2nd and very approachable in price. You could also go all out and buy a current box of termies and make sure to pose them appropriately.

Or you could just go with Space Crusade. I'll even add, don't bother with the expansions. They don't improve the game in my opinion. They are just bloat.
Go for the Eldar expansion if you have to pick one. It lets you replace a marine squad with an eldar squad.

Cool KG. I'd like to get Space Crusades but if I can't nab a copy, I'll pick up Space Hulk 4th Ed. for sure.
