Here's my 3D recreation of the HeroQuest logo (created in 3ds max):

You can download an uncompressed version of the logo (including a transparent background) right HERE.

Beautiful.
Thanks for that!

Is it a 3D model with depth / raised lettering? Or is it just a different material for the gold? I ask because if it has depth, you can export it as an STL and I can 3D print it.

The logo is indeed "true" 3D:

Image

Granted though, the details (like slightly rounded corners or surface scratches) are all faked via shaders, and especially the rock base is mostly a texture map. Also the perspective on the rock base is totally faked (by skewing and tapering it) to match the one in the original. After all, the lettering on the original logo is seen full frontal (or at least I treated it as such, to trace the letters), while the rock base shows a clear perspective, as if the logo is looked at from below.

Image

So ultimately the rock base wouldn't really work as a 3D print. But I guess it can be much more easily chiseled out of some styrodur or foamcore, painted to look like proper rock, with the 3D printed letters glued on top (or slightly pushed into the material). What kind of 3D printer do you have? Or do you just use services like Shapeways?

I have a Creality Ender 3, but that is not really important.

You should have been able to get the proper effect by using a straight base and positioning the camera lower. But I understand the desire to make approximations.

Any chance you can straighten the base, make it about the same depth as the raised text and export as an STL?

You did a lot of great work and I'd REALLY like to try printing one!

Nope, that would cause the lettering to "tilt backwards", leading to a different perspective on the text. I could have skewed the camera frustrum, but altogether it's not really necessary, since this distortion works on the rendering.

Here's are two STL files of the logo, both with and without the base. Make sure to post some images when you've printed them!

Thank you for the files, I will look at them this weekend.

On the perspective thing, I visualize engineering data all time and I wanted to point out that you are overcomplicating this and all of your future 3D visual products can also be 3D objects which look appropriate from all angles (and be printed). I hope we can both agree that it would be really cool to get something for free here!

While it is mathematically correct that perspective will result in tha type of distortion you describe, the effect in practice is minimal provided you configure your scene without very wide viewing angles. Here is an image showing a square grid at 10m (white) and 9m (blue) distance from the screen.

grids.gif

The view port is configured as a typical person sitting at a monitor (0.5m distant to a screen 0.6m wide). No complex view frustrum transormations are applied. The squares remain square (as far as anybody can tell) and placing a more physically correct model at the top of the screen would get you the perspective effect you are looking for.

True, I could have placed it closer to the top of the frame to achieve it, but even then it would have taken more time to match the perspective of the original then simply distorting it to my liking ;)

Agreed. But I want a 3D print with the cool base you made and anything else you might make in the future |_P
