Puck & Oberons Friday Dungeon
Continuing their trek through Puck's Lost World our gallant hero's are cautiously following a trail through a forest when they hear movement ahead. Careful observation reveals that there is a small band of Orc's obviously intent on an important destination.
Still using caution they follow them, and are lead to the Inn of The Screaming Skulls.
Entering the Inn we are faced with 2 closed doors. Which to open first? The choice is made and we find 2 skeletons, which are quickly dispatched and a locked door.. Not this way then. The other door is opened and.... a cupboard. Leaving Zanfya Greybeard to check the cupboard, Brocanon the barbarian opens the door to find 2 Spirit Riders guarding their tombs. As the door opens, the cupboard doors behind Zanfya also open to reveal a Chaos Warrior who immediately attacks our brave wizard. Missed. With space restricted by the layout of the room the other members of our party cannot help this time. The fast reaction of Zanfya and his staff fells the Warrior, now to remove the black skeletons!
Brocanon attacks with the Spirit Blade, 4 skulls are thrown; the Rider defends with… 1 black shield, the survival die is thrown, a shield, the 1st Rider succumbs. The brave barbarian decides to hold the door way to protect his fellow hero’s and the 2nd Rider attacks with 3 skulls; Brocanon defends with 1 white shield. 2 BP down. Again the Spirit Blade slashes through the air but the wounds received prove to be too much and it misses. “Move” cries Valinar the elf “let me in”, Brocanon stumbles from the door and Valinar lets fly with his Elvin Bow, which proves as deadly accurate as ever. 3 skulls cannot be defended by the Rider and a black skull shows with the survival dice. The riders are defeated. Time to move on.
The door is opened to find the Ice Witch. She immediately cries some magic incarnation and a shower of Ice Shards fly at Brocanon. Another BP gone. He spins with broadsword in hand and the Ice Witch loses 1 BP.
Again Valinar and his bow comes to Brocanon's rescue. 3 Skulls for the bow, no shields for the Witch. She is gone. Through the door, down the passage to find another 2 Spirit Riders. Again Brocanon leads the way with the Spirit Blade. With Morgusson of Halmere, watching the rear, as the band’s Ranger, in case the band of Orcs that were followed into this Inn suddenly appear. Our heroes are trapped between the Riders and their tombs and a fierce battle commences. Attack dice fly, skulls show, defence shields show, survival skulls appear, three rounds ensue yet none of the battlers loses a BP. Exhausted Valinar drops to a knee and thrust upwards with his Orc's Bane (the only close quarters weapon the he carries) yet the Rider cannot defend himself from this change of tactics and falls. The extra room allows Brocanon a better and more powerful arc for the Blade and his Rider drops as well. Zanfya checks the Tomb and yet another Chaos warrior sneaks out at him. 3 skulls show for the Warrior with his sneak attack, Zanfya defends with 2 White Shield’s and counters with his staff, 2 skulls, The Warrior defends but only a single black shield shows, again the wizard prove his ability to look after himself in close combat (must be a disciple of Gandalf the Grey)
Opening the door into the centre room, all that is there is a table upon which is found a skeleton key. A search for traps and secret doors reveals that this is a dead end, so back we go to the locked door. Morgusson (the key holder) unlocks the door which immediately crashes back to show the passage way is occupied by a Wraith.
Brocanon attacks with the Blade, misses, the Wraith Stumbles back and forgets the words of his spell and the Blade flashes again, 4 skulls appear and the Wraith is unable to defend (another four skulls!!) and, like a slain vampire, is reduced to a pile of ash.
Into an empty room, a little treasure is found and a secret door creeps open, The Master of the Spirit Riders is there, the formidable Graveyard Keeper!
The Keeper casts Strengthen Un-dead and his defences increase to 5 die and now has 5 BP. Our hero’s all have space to surround him and attack. To be fair the Graveyard Keeper defends with power and dexterity, yet the sustained onslaught proves to be too much even for him and he is sent back into his tomb.
The sun is setting and showdows lengthen as door is opened and a Chaos Sorcerer is waiting!
It seems that this Inn is the meeting point for the powerful magic bearers of Morcar's army.
The Sorcerer proves to be the most powerful of all with the Tempest stopping Morgusson in his tracks. He nimbly avoids the others attempt to stop him and casts Fear on Brocanon, again he sidesteps the attempts of Zanfya and Valinar. This time a Cloud of Chaos is spoken by the Sorcerer and only the magical ability of Zanfya is able to resist this powerful spell. It is down to who is stronger with their magical ability, not the brute force of weapons that will decide this battle. Zanfya starts to recite his own Magic, The Sorcerer laughs…. Yet the ruse works and again our wizard reveals his ability with the wood, the staff drops the Sorcerer to his Knees, Unable to defend (all white shields appear) our hero swings and the trusty Staff finishes the encounter. Removing the Black Magic that stopped his fellow travellers, Zanfya leads the way out of the room.
Stopping for breath, in an empty room, searches reveal a horde of treasure and another Chaos Warrior hiding. It misses and is quickly dispatched. Opening the door, the way out of this place of Morcar’s Magic is found, yet it is guarded by yet another Warrior. Zanfya, realising the bands exhausted state, uses the Tempest to halt the impending attack. Morgusson decapitates the stranded Warrior with his Snake Whip.
Our faithful four survive (just) and head off to hide up and recuperate, before their next challenge to escape this World is revealed. With his eyes nearly closed, desperate for sleep, Morgusson asks quietly. “Where did that band of Orc’s go?”
