Hello!

Hi, I didn't see an introductory board so I thought this was the best place. I can't tell you how shocked I am to see a community dedicated to HeroQuest, every hobby store I've been to people have been clueless about the game having never heard of it. I've got the standard British version, no expansions unfortunately I'm always dubious about the quality of used games online, nothing worse than paying for smashed miniatures (or ones with a terrible paint job). I actually had a question for you all since my rulebook never had anything to say on the subject. Combat between players on the default quests. The rulebook has nothing to say and I know that some quests are overtly collaborative but is this something that's even permitted? Or is it purely at the players discretion? Custom quests obviously you can do what you like but I was just wondering in the quest books whether it would upset the balance of the game or not. I've had friends raring to attack each other over what they saw as theft of treasure and what not and was never sure whether I should let them duke it out or not. Just wanted to hear some opinions on the matter.

Hi, welcome to the forum!

I think in the EU version the players are technically allowed to attack each, but that will mess up the game.
In the US version I think it's fordidden to do it altogether.

My opinion however is that it's out of place for heroes to attack each other, it's against the spirit of the game. The heroes with their given skills are complementing each other, they are not to stand on their own, and only united they will stand against the evil minions. Even in custom quest it would be unacceptable in my opinion, it would be a totally different game.

Without grabbing the rulebook, I don't think it's expressly forbidden in US rules. However, it certain,y violates the spirit of the game. It is very rare, but occasionally one of my heroes may get upset and want to attack another hero, I've never stopped it. I don't think they've ever actually killed another player though - usually a pound of flesh is sufficient for them.

The NA instruction booklet does rather imply that it is only possible to attack a monster rather than forbid in words to attack another hero:
p. 13: "As a Hero you may attack any monster that you are adjacent to."

Vice versa:
p. 22: "A monster may attack any Hero that it is adjacent to."

For spells, the cards state who the spell can be cast on.

I rewrote the rules in such a way that everything - attacks, spells, skills - can be made/cast on/against "any one figure" and leave the choice to the heroes and me what to do with our figures. But trust me, as a hero group you do not wanna backstab your way through my dungeon or put a healing spell on a Fimir just for fun.
ghan wrote an awesome questpack, Champion of the Empire, that lets the heroes choose the path of light or of darkness. They then are opponents if different choices are made, sometimes openly, sometimes secretly.

Neither rules say anything about attacking players.
If you go by the rule of thumb that if it isn't specifically expressed in the rules, it's not in the game, then you can't attack other heroes.

The UK rules however imply a certain PVP aspect by making players have to "ask" if they may move through another hero.
This is pretty much an invite to allow attacking of other players.

Can I move through you?
No, lol!
Then I attack you instead.
Ok, move through then.

Works great :D
It's fun for certain scenarios, but destructive if the player is just an *Play-Doh factory*. Exclude that player afterwards. No kidding!

I think I'll probably forbid it in future as tasoe said they're all jacks of different trades and pvp wouldn't be very balanced. It's just sort of implied like the genie spell for example reads "...OR attack anyone on the board." Anyone over monster. Same with Tempest: "A small Tempest is created which envelops one monster or player of your choice. That monster or player will then miss his next turn." I think they're probably just saying hey the potential for pvp is there if you want to do it in a custom scenario or whatever.

EU, both editions: "To attack a monster or a character..." clearly states that you may attack another hero, because further down: "The player characters must try to roll white shields" when defending, which clearly makes "character" a synonym for "hero". It expressly allows you to attack another hero. TA-DAA.

Ah yes you are right, I've pored over this book for literally years I can't believe I never noticed it before. Well I better go and work on some deathmatch scenarios then.

I never seen PvP in HQ...but I have taken the time to tempt the wizard and elf with great powers if they would only nuke their homies.
No one takes me up on that offer, but my room mate...she has thought about it. lol

It’s a cooperative game but I wouldn’t say no, if on the final stage you kill the evil boss and you find a powerful artifact where you can rule the world with it. Then I could allow a PVP battle if anyone wants to take it and be evil.
