Playing with a single kid

For those who have played with kids...
I am thinking about trying HQ out with my five year old.
It would just be me and him, though.
Any suggestions on how to adjust the game for just one
Player? I doubt he would be able to keep up with more
Than one hero.
I was thinking about giving him the Elf, with maybe an
Extra body point, and maybe some more magic.
Any other thoughts?

Actually my best suggestion would be to get another couple of kids.
Assuming your kid has friends you could arrange a playdate and host a game of HeroQuest.
You got to get more kids involved, so they can play alone when daddy is at work.
It'll be fun!
Sorry for not answering your question...

I think it is the best answer possible.
Invite them over night and play with them until it is late. Then next weekend let your kid sleep with them and have a nice evening with your wife. Who knows maybe she's spawning another one next year.

Anderas - we're expecting our third yesterday (due date was yesterday, that is).
This will be out last - no more spawning in this house.
Unless it has to do with spawning orcs, goblins, and demons through magic. hehehe

Torilen: "what do you mean, no more?!? We can't stop at three! There are four heroes"
Wife: "The first three times were ok, but I'm telling you, I'm NOT doing it if you dress up as a bearded dwarf!"

Playing with one child will make it easier - no down time for other people's turns, which can make young children get distracted very easily. Explain each rule as you go through the game, then prompt him to remember it the next time the event comes up. By the end of the quest he'll be excited to kill things as soon as he enters a room, then search for things (make sure you have a quest where things can be found). Don't be too harsh except to punish mistakes like running around randomly and releasing lots of monsters at once.

Instead of an extra BP, why not place an extra healing potion he is sure to find? You can also stack the Treasure deck a bit by removing some of the Hazards and Wandering monsters. Maybe you could run an extra Hero yourself to buddy up with him. If you do, he can play the Barbarian with extra BPs and you can play the Wizard in support.

I always understood that the quests are designed for 4 heroes, so we always use all 4. I controlled at least one, usually 2 to provide stability as referred to above. My son would lead and I would follow with the "NPCs".

This can be dealt with by issuing artifacts and extra equipment to a smaller party. The items are considered 'on loan from Mentor' until the end of the mission.
