U.S. versions of KK and RotWL both came with the same Alchemist Shop as each other. Different potions than FH and MitM.

Well, that explains everything! Where I can get those rule sheets? Ar least neither in KK's or RotWL's questbook downloaded from this site doesn't include it.

In a recent adventure at our table, the heroes cleared out an abandoned inn (The Inn of Chaos), and decided to take it over as their base of operations.

They all took shares of the deed, called it The Seawolf Inn, and spent quite a bit of their gold to bring it back up to code, so to speak, and soon it attracted visitors and guests. Outside of house rules and roleplaying, this really is only flavor for the Quest--if you play with an overworld map like we do, their inn is now a "settlement" where they can rest, and buy equipment, and hire mercenaries like they would in an established town. The players get attached to something they've made up together! For instance, when a hero perished in a Quest, and they buried his remains under a tree in the courtyard.

Since it's all fluff any way, a made-up castle or inn for the heroes is a rewarding gold dump for the players, and is not something so challenging for Zargon as say, letting the group buy matching sets of enchanted Mithril :D

A base of operations is a way I have used to gold sink in TT RPG's. The use of such a mechanism in HQ can be a good way to go. Even if you are not going with an RPG lite version of things and just go with board game with some player mods, having an official base can be a great tool. Gives them a reason to spend gold and will give them a place to store things un-needed for any particular quest.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

If their base of operation is a small keep...very tiny...like...kitchen, dining hall, a set of connected rooms (maybe 2 or 3 each) for each
of the heroes, and perhaps a library...would be great, as well. It would be something they wouldn't want to lose, but could pose a
hazard if they let someone else get their hands on the keep.

Long story short - the heroes would have to sink money into keeping guards at the keep in order to have their possessions protected.

A small keep would allow for a reverse dungeon. The heroes and their minions have to repel a pack of Zargons minions from the keep.
Perhaps the EWP is allowed to teleport X amount of thugs into the area per turn until he has exhausted his resources. Set up like 3 sensitive points in the keep that must be defended at all costs. The stables, if the minions of Zargon get 2 complete turns in the stable it is destroyed.
The well, if the evil ones minions can get to the well they deploy a water elemental to destroy the well and steal all the water.
And the pantry. If the evil ones can gain access to the pantry for 2 turns the heroes are wiped out of food for the season and must dismiss all mercenaries.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

This is a great idea! You could even give them a blank Quest map to design their own keep, the cost of each additional room, door, piece of furniture (and even traps Zargon doesn't know about!) could come out of their share of gold coins!

Thanks Guys!
I get a good idea at least once a year or so. ;)
