As for the magic part... I would have taken the original pic/scan into photo shop and made it grey scale/black and white then I could use this as an alpha depth map in a 3D program, White being high areas and black being the lowest areas.

Thats not all about it. I had a similar idea and gave it a start - taking the original board, running it through a software that can calculate a high map from a picture with shadows (like Crazybump or Shader Map), making a 3D model from this, translating it to a CNC script, have a wooden model done and build a mould from it.
The project came to an early halt when I found the first step to be already too much work, at least for the time I could spare for it.
To give a halfway accurate representation of the 3D structure of the floor, the gameboard as depicted has to be worked over. Main problem are the shadows of the imagined walls. I never got that finished.

I started to recreate the logo panel in 3D Studio max, however:

Yeah, the re-meshing of the topology would always take a while, and bump mapping, normal mapping or displacement mapping can be a bit awkward at times. The theory behind it is always way easier. I would be easier to just import it as an image plane and the create the topology straight over it, you could even do it exact scale that way if you had a picture file of the board that was the exact size, still time consuming though.

Just thought of an easier way; get someone else to do it! :P

I honestly don't know much about the process but rather than dealing with the shadow he just copied and posted squares from elsewhere in the rooms to replace those with shadow and turned some round to make it less obvious where he had done this.

Next time I speak to him I will try and direct him to this thread so he can answer some of these questions and tell you exactly what he did.

Now mount it in a table like this! ;)

I will need to mount it on something as the 3mm MDF has bowed slightly with the paint job ... so once complete it will need to be stuck down to something rigid.

Really cool idea. I like as well the toned down colors.

I know a door is a door, except when its a jar :P but I don't like the look of any of them, apart from the first and second that all seem a little too plain of a design.

They are plain of design because they are so flippin old ... these pre-date HeroQuest. :D

I am really looking forward to all the doors that come with the Twisting Catacombs stuff.

I have printed off my own doors, and am kind of in the process of adjusting them up to be cast... but that's because I am a cheap-skate!

I do like the oozey wall though, I will have to make me one of them.

an.. oozy wall? i'm not sure how that would work in the game... is it a doorway that only works for oozy creatures?
