finished First Light - share your thoughts!

First Light is the first time I've played new content as a hero with my kids (using the app). It has been a fun series of adventures. We have averaged a game a month during 2025. I am glad I used the app rather than running the game myself using the questbook.

Barbarian, Scout (using regular dwarf mini), Elf and Wizard. Older kid has taken barbarian every time, younger switches between Elf and Wizard. This was my first time using the Scout, which was my excuse to be the one to open doors over the Barbarian.

The storyline seemed deeper than the original quests and expansions. I don't want to include potential spoilers. There were also some new game mechanics not seen in previous quests which added to the fun.

Thinking of a run through Kellar's Keep next....

[Daedalus]

Kellar's Keep is a fine second choice, but also consider Return of the Witch Lord instead. Since there have been many new expansions added by Avalon Hill, playing either KK or RotWL is a viable route rather than both. Of the two, RotWL has been said to be more interesting.

I found Kellar’s Keep to essentially be a gauntlet of monsters to kill and deadly traps. Good, but not a lot of variety— some twists here and there, but it’s mostly a long, brutal fight. Get ready to face orcs, goblins, and “Abominations” galore, with a few other beings tossed in.

Return of the Witch Lord has some unusual stuff going on, and introduces some imaginative puzzles and traps that help to change what you can expect out of HQ. Plus, it’s almost entirely filled with undead. Lots and lots and lots of undead. George Romero would drool over the numbers of undead this campaign holds!

Both are great, but I lean slightly toward RotWL.

Thank you for the comments Daedalus and Parzival. We will eventually play both KK and RotW...I have copies of both!

One of the major attractions for me to purchase First Light was that it starts new characters, and I anticipated the quests would be easier than some of the expansions. Once my kids are a bit more savy we may try the more difficult expansions like Mage of the Mirror, Ogre Horde or Frozen Horror. My brother and his wife play also and would probably let us borrow expansions.

When we play there is always a little extra danger...our poodle steals from the game table during our games! Greater dangers lurk beneath Barak Tor than the Witch Lord
