Adapting other dungeon crawler game contents to HeroQuest

Postby BroccoliRage » Sunday December 25th, 2022 12:56am

So I recently purchased the game Descent: Legends Of The Dark.

I never had any intention of playing Descent: Legends Of The Dark.

I've been collecting dungeon tiles, battle mats, boards, terrain and minis from other dungeon crawl games and using them for HeroQuest. I'm sure I'm not the only one who does this, but it's been a rewarding experience for customizing and expanding my own game. Now that I've purchased Descent (which I've been referring jokingly to as the best HeroQuest expansion yet made) I have my eyes on Gloomhaven and Zombicide: Black Plague/Green Horde.

What have your experiences with modifying/adapting/cannibalizing other games for HeroQuest been like? Do you know anything about the games I've mentioned? Are there others I should consider?

My goal is to build an amazing and expansive HQ setup. I intend on building a few custom boards and dioramas, as well.

Back in the days of the original release, Dragon Strike was one that people commonly borrowed components from, including the game boards themselves. But that's not one that could be readily acquired today, so far as I know. Though I wonder... that was a TSR property, so perhaps it's possible that the rights transferred to Wizards of the Coast, and subsequently to Hasbro, which would make it fair game for an Avalon Hill remake.

Mansions of Madness has some good minis, though they have oversized clunky bases made to hold stat tile inserts. One would need to cut the little pegs off the bottom of those figures (they insert into holes in the bases) and glue them to standard gaming bases.

Actually, I'm glad you mentioned that. It looks like Dragon Strike and Dungeon! have both been rereleased. I'll add them to the list.

(Edit: I checked again. I'm wrong, only Dungeon! has been)

My collection has gotten wierdly eclectic. I have miniatures from older editions of Warhammer, a handful from the original HeroQuest box set, a slew from the old World if Warcraft boardgame, a slew of MageKnights I'm rebasing, a bunch of HetoScape strays, and a huge amount from the 3e D&D Miniatures games.

Designing new heroes, new monsters, and new adventures, while keeping within the admittedly self imposed restriction of using the Old World as my setting has been a blast. I'm intending on creating a full campaign and using HQ as the ultimate fast and loose RPG system.

And it all started with finding out HQ was being rereleased. I originally just wanted a fun boardgame from my childhood to play with my kid. Now I'm collecting, customizing, painting minis, and kit bashing.

I'm really excited. And thanks for giving me those names to look up.

Yeah in my Christmas shopping I saw "Dungeon!" on many retail store shelves. I personally have plenty of miniatures (though occasionally I am tempted to look at 40k miniatures for Space Crusade, they are always either too dynamic or too expensive...).

I've picked up a few from the Hordes line, and two Warhammer Dire Chasm and one Warhammer Age of Sigmar set. I don't know how much more GW stuff I'm going to buy, it's just too damn expensive. I'm slowing down on minis myself. I've also picked up a fair amount of Steamforged Games' Epic Encounters. The bases are a bit big, but since when have HQ minis ever really fit on the grid lol.

I am so glad I got back into this game, it's bringing me a lot of joy.

I've added the MageKnight Dungeon artifacts sets to my HQ. Their doors are also great looking and almost the perfect size but they aren't very stable by themselves.

I've actually re-based a bunch of old MageKnight figures. Is Dungeon artifacts a set?

Yeah, MageKnight Dungeons turned the miniatures wargame into a dungeon crawler. It added a new faction (Heroes), dungeon tiles, treasure chests that contained "random" treasure, and neat little doors that open and close. There were 2 artifact sets released which contained dungeon decor (such as statues, pillars, an obelisk, a fountain, and a couple of pools) as well as tokens which would give these objects magic properties.

I made a load of HeroQuest stats for the monsters in the D&D board game Legend of Drizzt. The tiles are usable too.

Any of the D&D boardgames offer a load of good models for cheap these days.
