3D Heroquest Boards

Postby zstu1979 » July 2nd, 2020, 9:54 pm

Hi,

I have been inspired by all the great posts on this forum and decided to venture into a basic crafting project using basic materials. I have created a 4-piece Heroquest board from double corrugated cardboard and laminated A4 sheets of paper and tonight I gave it a trial run. The board has 1.5 inch squares and you will note that the single corridors were still quite tight but they are manageable. Although I live in the UK I decided to play the North American version for the extra challenge. I haven't completed all of the components and tiles for the game hence why you can see me using a closed door instead of a blocked corridor piece but I will have these soon.

3D (ADVANCED) HEROQUEST BOARD
I have also drafted up a board on Photoshop using the Advanced Heroquest tile sets and colours and I am hoping to craft a 3D representation of this also. The links below show a quick game played on an inkjet test print with 30x30mm squares and some renders I made with AutoCAD. This time I will mount the board onto an MDF base for extra stability.

Looks absolutely stunning. I’m a big fan of printed stuff as I think it’s impossible to paint as well as the original art - yours demonstrates this perfectly. Such neat 3D and super doors that sit on the walls. Lovely.

That's really cool. Which files did you print out for the walls and floors?

Do you have a shareable format for the 30x30 mm square board?
I was thinking of upsizing my game, but I haven't stumbled across a extra-high quality board images for printing.
... there's probably one layin' around the Inn somewhere...

I just noticed, I've been promoted to skeleton :D -->

Hi all,

Thank you for your nice comments.

Stig
Thank you, I figured this would be the quickest way for me to make a 3D board. The doors were a real issue as there was no way to have a real open door so the slip over doors were an easy solution. I did draft up a 3D door model for printing but I ditched this idea as it would have been quite expensive to get about 20 doors. The doors I did make are made from chipboard with the graphics glued over, the lintels on each door are big so that they stand out and noticeable when playing.

Thank you. I think I found a 300dpi image file of the board somewhere on the net so I scaled it in Photoshop to fit a 1.5 inch square layout. Each quarter of the board was made up like a jigsaw, unfortunately you don't get many full rooms that fit on an A4 sheet so I had to print each room separately (some having the corridors) which I then laminated with a matt finish, I cut out each room and then taped them together until I had a quarter of the board which was then glued to a sheet of thick double corrugated cardboard. Ideally I would have liked to glue the board to some sort of wooden base but as all the DIY stores were closed due to being in lock-down I decided to go with cardboard. The walls were made in the same way and I capped the top of each with strips of black cardboard. The wall texture was a seamless brick texture I found online which I tweaked in Photoshop.

Congratulations on your promotion :D :skeleton: :D . I will send you a separate link for the 30x30mm board.

Thanks for that. You wouldn't happen to have files for the board split up into rooms would you? Be very grateful if you do.

What are the dimensions of a board made up of 30x30mm squares?

Khimbar,

I don't think I have each room on separate files, in photoshop I simply centralised my print view on the room I wanted and printed at 100%, laminated and cut each room out to suit. The process was a bit of trial and error as one tiny slip of the cutting knife would mean that there would either be an ugly gap or an overlap, this happened to me a small number of times. If you give me a bit of time I can look into getting each room on separate files but what size of squares were you looking at? My squares are 1.5 inches each so the overall board is almost 1m long.

Arntisdale,

It depends on how you want to print off the file, if you print off the file in sections and stitch together then the overal size with the borders is about 808mm x 641mm. If you decide to just go with the squares minus the borders then you are about 780mm x 570mm. My board does not have the HeroQuest ribbon at the bottom as this would have been too big for my table so I just have the slim border all around.

Thanks for the reply.

Not sure on the size squares yet. I'm loving the idea of a massive board but practicality suggests it might be best to go smaller. I'm not great with photoshop or things like that so I'm struggling to figure it all out.

30mm sounds like a decent size though, I think.
