Well, haven't read the whole thread, just some of the last posts - let's see...
As for me, I celebrated my 43rd birthday this monday.
Just like many other roleplayers I write my own RPGs for a hobby. My first one was "Megama" (which I started back in school and army, and at the very beginning of university, still in handwriting), with extremely detailed rules (perhaps not very player-friendly  ), that took place in the "world of myths and fairytales", this is, a version of the real world Europe in the time of the crusades, but where dragons and unicorns really exist an magic works. You know, real myths are normally not situated in Middle-Earth. It was a bit too big, and I never finished it. My second project was "Rrrhuff-That", a game set in the modern world, where you play animals - dogs, cats, rats, birds etc - in a big city. It had a somewhat moody tone. I had some co-authors who did some chapters, but I wrote about 80% (on a Commodore 64 :!: ). I made 50 or 100 copies (it's about 20 years since then, don't remember exactly) and indeed convinced some shop owners to sell it. This was the last of these projects for many years, though I did some illustrations and articles for existing rpgs in the "Daused Dode Drolle"fanzine (which has developed into a board game publishing house since then).
One day (years later) I made up a SF game together with a friend, called "2051".It playes in the near future. A technique has been discovered of opening gates to parallel universes, but it's top secret. As passing through the gates can cause mutations, criminals with high sentences are offered an amnesty in exchange for listing in expeditions to unexplored parallel worlds. We really made it up in one evening. I later wrote down some basic rules, not enough to publish, but enough to play, and we really had a group playing it for some time.
Next idea was "Modulo", a PnP rpg with a simple basic set of rules and several "modules" - different versions of rules for combat, magic, abilities etc, of which players would stick together their own system. I started to work it out several times, but never got very far. My ideas for the Olde Inn Modular System for House Rules (working title: "the Tome"), which most of you will know, is of course based in Modulo. One time a friend and his wife wanted to start a rpg group and asked me be GM. I used the Modulo rules and the world background of my old Megama concept. It worked quite well, but we never used modules, but sticked with the basic rules, mosly because half of the players were very unexperienced rp gamers.
Most recently (but it still has been more than a year that I last worked on it) I started to do Harry Potter rpg togther with a friend.
Whew... nostalgia... just had to write this.. should go to bed now...
Have a look ;)

Another nice, free alternative to plastic minis has already been posted about in this thread. They definitely have the HeroQuest look, as they were specifically created for HeroQuest and it's expansions. They would have to remain part of a free project, of course.

While making our reedition of the game and all their quest pack with heroquest france (see the remastered edition 2011-2012 on http://www.heroquest-reloaded.blogspot.com) we're having the project of making this edition official, get the rights of the game and build all the components officially in order to sell them like a real game !

Heroquest France has send a lot of mail to have a answer... Rumors saying that it was HASBRO who have the rights of Heroquest... But after they answering us, it is said that HASBRO has just 50% of the rights of the game... The others are... GAMES WORKSHOP !!!!!

All of us know that, even GW have a great collection of minis, they don't are very gentel with fans of their games... So, they have answer us too, after millions and millions of mails... And they just said that they have 50% of the rights of Heroquest, concerning illustrations, miniatures (they have all of the originals moulders !!!!) and storyline (characters, texts of the quests...etc)

So Hasbro have just a licence, and, in fact, they don't have actually rebuy this licence, so they don't have anything. The giant Games Workshop keep all the treasures in a well guarded trapped chest, and they don't want to make a new edition of this game. It is very sad because they don't allowed fans to make the game they dream... Games Workshop are just directed by stupid guys, who just want money, and not success in the "gamers world" !

So, we just allowed players to play our edition by printing themselves the game and finding by their own way, the miniatures and all over elements...

Perhaps if we could make a gold pot with all the heroquest community, we could, one day, buy all the rights left by Games Workshop... Like Luther King said "I had a dream..."
