Well....

Why not use a club? I'm not at home so I can't pull my card, but I think mine is 1AD/diagonal...

Like others have said, you can't drop it in with everything else the same, but there are a few simple mods that could make it tenable.

1. Make it a starting weapon for 1 or 2 new heroes or classes.

Or

2. Go ahead and substitute it for the short sword across the board but modify the quest order. Move trial until later in the questbook. You probably want to throw a bit of "make up" gold around.

We use an open world system so I don't have the trial become available until later, you could do something similar to manage the lower starting power.

Not sure, but By the time the Rust Spell comes along I think the hero has enough money to buy another LSword or BSword, or everyone pitched in to get that Hero one.

I've never seen anyone buy a Short Sword sadly, which is to bad for the SSword:(

To be realistic, why would Mentor spend all this time recruiting the heroes not to give them decent equipment to protect themselves? Are all dwarves and elves so poor that all they start with is a short sword?

The dwarf likely begins with heavy armor, helmet, and an axe, hammer, or broad sword and shield. Why would dad send him out with anything less?

And the elf, schooled in magic, is likely to have the means to be fully outfitted as well.

The answer is that it is a game.

The reason for the short sword... You can have 2, hold 1 in the other hand instead of a Shield... DUAL WIELD. 2 Attacks in 1 turn.

You should take a deeper look at my mods "The Essentials". I did mention there's a lot of reasoning behind all that made it in their, but it's under the surface, not explained. The Short Sword is another big 1, meaning it's already had a lot of thought.

It's a trade off, 2 weak attacks or 1 strong attack with extra defence. A hero might choose to quest that way for a while. Bringing more choices and variety to the game... Extra spice! And, part of the mechanic already exists... Heroic brew.

A custom Hero might start with a Bow.

Agreed, maybe start em with a Foil with a bit of a blade that can do diagonal & close to 2Att Dam? Yes a Foil sounds funny to use but I'm reaching here anyway:)

mitchiemasha I can't find "The Essentials" thread, can you link it for me?

It doesn't have its own, it's the same link i spam many threads with. A collection of ideas compacted into a 1 page print out. I'm sure you've seen it before, we've discussed it. You might of missed "Short Sword: Dual Wield, 2 Attacks, not Diagonal." Everything is compact and simple, it doesn't go into details explaining why the need for each mod but as you've discovered here with the Short Sword, something was needed and it's already covered.

One thing I'd like to do one day is create some Quests that start the Heroes off at even a lower power level than beginning Heroes. Such beginner Quests would require even wimpier monsters like giant bats and rats. They would serve as origins stories, each solo but maybe culminating in four-Hero Quests. Clubs and daggers would work well in these formative Quests, I think.

Perhaps find items along the way to use, like a piece of furniture to toss.

I've toyed with that idea, too, Daedalus. Thought of the heroes as simple villagers, called into
action by the local elder, who is a semi-powerful wizard in the service of more powerful
individuals. The heroes go on a short mission to find their weapons, armors, spells, etc.
and become the characters of the heroes. From there, they would be given better and better
magical items to make their abilities better.

(notice, a sidetrack from the leveling system...instead using magic items to beef up the heroes)

Magical Items are nice because you don't need to do all the bookkeeping; but given time, you will have lots of cards.
Leveling is nice because you don't have so many cards, but your hero looks like a sheet of paper with lots of pencil marks.

Generally I prefer the cards - you have the rules that you need in front of you.

What I see here is a completely different kind of system:

You exchange the hero card!
You start with a peasant hero card. You get your weapon and some ability through some quest... as soon as you have everything, you change your peasant hero card with one of the starting heroes.
From there, you go through the same process again - you develop by gathering certain items, then you exchange your barbarian card with a knight card. For example.

You gave me a head bug. I amalgamated this topic now with the one where Goblin King was telereading my mind. I think the next redesign of my system comes close... d'oh! :D 8-) |_P
